Anybody else calling up alot of jakes

Postby peewee » Mon Apr 01, 2002 11:39 am

Called one up opening morning that sounded like the man. Called up another Sat. morning for a buddy of mine and he looked like he had about a 6 inch beard but we let him walk. He had a full gobble and double and triple gobble he had me fooled, especially when he ran off 2 jakes while he was coming in.
Went this morning hear 6, set up on 1 and guess what, another jake. Will I ever get a break.

On opening day, I had four jakes and nineteen hens at twenty yards, three mature gobblers out to the left at sixty yards and three more mature gobblers behind me at about one hundred yards. The setup couldn't have been any more perfect, and I just knew that I was going to take a bird...the only question was whether it would take ten minutes or three hours for one of the big gobblers to run the jakes away from the hens. All was well until an apparently deaf BUFFOON walked into the whole setup, squawking away on his trusty box call, and never bothering to stop and listen to see if anything answered, which was occurring on a regular basis from the gobblers to my left. Needless to say, it took me a few seconds to regain my composure when he approached and asked "if I was hearing anything"! Back to the jake question: I called up a flock of five jakes on Monday, March 25. Thirty minutes after that bunch came in, and while they were still in sight, a second group of nine stepped to within twenty feet of my position. It's fun to call at the jakes and test their reactions. They also provide an opportunity to see how much movement they will tolerate (such as raising a gun) before they detect you.

Well I dont turkey hunt but I had a guy I know @ work tell me that he had called up 11 in one day. I dont remember how they were grouped and I half axx listened too him. He's the type of guy that does everthing better and knew how to call the first time he put a call in his mouth. He just started duck hunting last year and was a professional within 2 hunts but thats what he told me about the jakes.Any of you guys ever experinced anyone like this. Peewee....don't feel bad. I have called up 2 jakes already this season. The first one gobbled 7-8 times. The other one never made a sound. Both of them came within in 20 yards of me. I wish they had been longbeards!

if you are unsure of the beard length of 6 in. you can look at the tail-feathers and determine if it is a mature bird... a 5 in. beard is legal if it is on a mature gobbler...

Judge I was hoping that bird would go to strutting out in front of my friend so he could see if he had a full fan but the bird came running in when he decided to come and never struted. He was just poking around. Thats alright though b/c he will definately be a shooter next year.

Dilly I heard Tommy went to Alabama to hunt with Chris Irons opening weekend but they didn't have any luck. I'm gonna try to take one weekend and go over there to visit and try my luck at an Alabama bird.
