Life's hard knocks
Well Duck it's like you said It was two men making an agreement. I don't feel that he had a clue this was going to happen and if he knew there was problems with the motor then he has to live with it. Some people can do that but I can't live with dogging a guy for selling me something that he thought was fine and found out later that it wasn't. If he offered to help I would probably take it but the agreement was between me and him with no promise. I wouldn't do you that way and I wouldn't want someone to do me that way. You are only as good as your word and what you stand for. If you don't understand that your hanging with the wrong guy.
Cookumducks, I thank you for what you said but I need no patting on the back for telling you the true. I'm glad you like the gun it was one of my favorite for years.
I'll try and sell the Over and unders I got and maybe I will get enough to get the girls on ski's before the summer is out. If not then as you said it was meant to be.
Better days
Dan

Worse case, start them out on a knee board behind your duck boat. Might not be as "COOL" as being in a fish-n-ski but it will be just as fun.

I'm planning on it.
I want you to know that I'm going to be real pissed if you out shoot me with that new gun.
I would like to make that road trip we talked about earlier. I think Duck4 and another friend is going to make the trip.
I plan to unless something happens. And the way this month is going that can't be ruled out.

I got a slightly different take on this one...
Having bought and sold numerous used vehicles over the last 10 years (every 2 years for me and my wife), I have gotten burned only once...A Chevy 4WD pickup that the rearend tore up in within a week of my buying it...I contacted the seller and told him he could (A) split the repair cost with me or (B) see me and my 1st cousin in court...Once he found out my cousin was a lawyer representing me for free, he was very happy to meet me halfway...
I suggest you contact the seller and see if yall can work something out...The motor was obviously worthless so he might be persuaded to see his good fortune in netting half the money rather than nothing...If he is a decent guy, he will work something out with you...If not, sue his ass-he deserves it...Plenty of lawyers will work for a 33% to 40% contingency fee i.e. if you dont win, you owe them nothing.

Duckman,
I'm sorry to hear of your bad luck. I wanted to tell you some things to look for when buying a used outboard, like a checklist to go by. First I would get the book on the modle and make to find the critical specs.
1. Run a compression check on the the blok.
a. Every piston should be within 10psi of stats and each other.
2. Run a resistance test on the electrical sys.
a. This can spot bad coils or stators that are exspensive to replace.
3. Check the lube in the lower unit and pay close attention to the color, smell and amount of water(free/immersed) in the oil.
a. This can tell you much about the state of that unit.(also run a pressure test on the lower unit housing to make shure it's not cracked.
4. The physical appearance of the motor really does mean a lot. If the skeg and gear housing look really beat up..Then they are. The paint on the block will tell you if the motor has ever run hot(loose flaky paint/white powdery substance around water jacket are tell-tale signs of running hot.
5. Run it and I mean hard...Load it down to max cap and run it...run it light and re-inspect again..
I know it's alot to do and you might not be able to do some of the checks yourself, but paying a good shop to do a run up would be well worth it. These things will really tell you what kind of shape it's in...I hope this helps you in the future....and feel free to e-mail and talk about some of these checks if you like.

UPDATE.
I sold my old 1974 25hp Johnson to Duck Nawtek, Gave him till this morning to run it and make sure it is all I said it was.
I hear you caught a bunch of fish. I take it was because of the great motor you had.
Put the check in the bank this AM. Gives me three hundred closer to the new motor.
Anyone in the market for some great Over and Unders? Come on boys I need a boat motor
