My lab was out running through the pasture this past Wed with me while I was looking for a horse, and well she managed to find her first skunk on that little outing. I got her home and washed her down in tomato juice followed by a good washing in lemon juice. This helped a little, but not all that much. This past weekend she was at a dog boarders and got washed twice in deskunking shampoo and that didn't help either. Everytime she gets the least bit wet you can smell her for a mile away!!! I was wondering if anyone has had any luck in getting that nice arroma off of their dogs. The lady at the dog boarders told me that it would take 4 to 6 weeks to wear off and I would like to speed up the process.
Thanks in advanced.

Do you think you could shave the dog to remove the smell? Dunno, just a thought. If you figure something out, please let us know.

I found this on the web:
Mix one quart of fresh 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, one quarter cup of baking soda, and one teaspoon of liquid detergent. Scrub in and rinse well. Your dog will come out of the tub smelling like fresh laundry right off the clothes-line.
I just copied and pasted this, I would be a little skeptical of the last line.
Good Luck!

try bacon greese with a big box of baking soda let it stay on for 15 to 20 minutes you smear the grease on then rub in the baking soda then rinse off with big bottle of lemon juice taking away the grease then bathe dog in a eggwash and beer then towel dry then apply pert shampoo that should do it

I've always heard that buttermilk works a better than tomato juice, but have never had to try. The peroxide thing sounds like it would work, but if you lab isn't ALREADY yellow....

get your dog smelling real good (as best you can under the circumstances) take him/her to one of them places that bath dogs, and trim nails, and put purdy lil ribbons in their hair etc. and tell them you want your dog all spiffied up on accounta you want to breed him/her to a certain other dog and you want the owner of that dog to be impressed with your dog. anyway those places are ridiculously overpriced for what you get under "normal" circumstances...which is what you hope to reflect by getting your dog smelling ok before you take him/her up there...anyway make them actually EARN their money on your dog.

I haven't had to try this myself but I read it in an outdoor magazine a few years ago. It said to remove skunk smell from a dog get some green pine limbs and light them on fire. Let the fire burn down and get good and smokey. Grab the dog by the legs and hold him in the smoke for a while. Of course don't drop him in. It didn't say why the smoke would neautralize the smell it probablly just covers it up but, it might be worth trying.

Well I tried CaptnT's suggestion of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and liquid laundary detergent lastnight on my dog Chase lastnight, she wasn't smelling too bad when I started but she did smell a little better after I washed her a couple of times. She smell good enough that my wife couldn't smell her anymore and she was allowed back in the house. I can still smell her a little bit if I stick my nose down by her head. The other good news is that the concoction didn't change the color of my chocolate lab.
The only suggestion that I would have for folks wanting to use this receipe is to go ahead and get everything you need to make it, especially the hydrogen peroxide. I had to go to Walmart, Kroger, and a convience store to get two bottles of the stuff as required. A friend of mine with the sheriff's department said that folks are using hydrogen peroxide to make crystal meth and that is why it can be hard to find at times.
Thanks for all of the input.

Sondance, what do you figure would be going through that dog's head when you held him up by the legs over a smoldering fire? Maybe, my owner has gone nuts and I'm for dinner.
Makes you wonder how folks come up with the stuff you read in magazines.
