Heard any turkeys gobble?

Was driving back from grandmother's house in ellisville this weekend. Saw about 15 turkeys in a field off of 588. Turned around and parked on the side of the road. They were only about 75 yards away from the Highway. My wife asked if there were any gobblers in the bunch and I told her to get out of the car and look with me. About that time a longbeard went into full strut in the middle of the field. We watched him for a minute and then I hooted at him. He gobbled. I hooted 4 more times and he gobbled 4 more times. My wife couldn't believe it. That was the first time she had ever seen and heard one gobble in the wild. So after much rambling, Yes the turkeys are gobbling. I can't wait for one to gobble after the 23rd.

Hey big bear, you need to try to take your wife with you this year and let her kill a longbeard.

It's about that time of the year. IF the cold weather passes, I think they will begin to hammer for us. South MS first then go north as it gets later in March. Can't wait, Gonna go listening for the first time next week.

I saw 3 longbeards in full strut with some hens last week. I don't like to see this as early as we are seeing it. I would like to see things start slow and wind up strong for the end of season, but it looks like it will be totally opposite. That will usually weed out the wannabees. Just my $.02

Report from the club Saturday said no birds gobblin'. Been watching a flock of 24 birds ( 6 beards, 18 hens ). The birds are still separated into gender groups.

Hope they stay this way until 3/23.

The MS season should start on Mar. 16, but they have decided to set aside that weekend for youths.

Blacklab,
Any good places to lease around Columbia for turkey huntin only. Maybe some clubs that would welcome turkey huntin only. Always heard about the turkey huntin down that way, but if you are like us here around home I know you will protect what you got, but if you feel the need to let me in on something send a p.m. Always lookin for another turkey huntin partner.

THRASHER,
Most leases in this area are deer/turkey combo's and the waiting list are wayyyyy long. We have one WMA in Marion Co. and I heard from a buddy who hunted on it say's it's way overcrowded.

I am not overly familiar with the area, but I know of a club in Lawrence County, Mississippi on a big buck program that is looking for members. It is about 4,000 acres and from what I understand they also have an abundance of turkey. If anyone is interested, I can try to get details ....

Is Lawrence County around Columbia. I have some real good spots around central ms, but it never hurts to have another place to go turkey hunting. I would be interested.

They are getting fired up boys. The last 2 mornings they have been hammering. Hopefully the rain will stay away until at least mid morning for the youth turkey hunt Saturday.
