sumbody xplain this headline to me????

Postby bigwater » Mon Aug 15, 2005 4:54 pm

in sunday's clarion ledger. the headline for the for the um football section stated that SPUDERLOCK PULLS AWAY...

then it goes on to say that spurlock was something like 8-21 passing. while lane was 8-10 and flatt was also like 7-9..

whats goin on.. how do you say that spulock is pullin away... he obviously sucks as a passer.. good runner sure ...

whats the deal rebel fans.. how short will o's leash be...

i'm guessing extremely short!!!

he was 13-30, however, some of those were running plays that they don't anticipate running in games, for the very reason that they didn't work, i think he had 4 drops, and then he was going against our # 1 defense, which is HEAD and shoulders above our # 2 D, while there is not nearly as big a dropoff in our 2nd team WR's.....

if that answers part of your question.....

he also ran for something like 10 yards per carry and 3 tds, and no, i'm not happy with 13-30, but that's the only "bad" performance he's turned in so far this fall, he bounced back today going something like 13-15 in the scrimmage they had at the end of practice.

you know this guy (spurlock) sounds awesome in practice... do you rebel fans think that the only thing that was holding him back last year was the fact that the offense he was running wasn't really suited for his "style"

or do you think that his nutz shrivel up into his stomach when the lights flip on and the bad guys walk out onto the field???

i think it's a little bit of both and alot of kurt roper..... (old qb's coach)....

not to mention an offense that even Eli has said he didn't really understand his senior year

to clarify what i said earlier....... now that i've re-read it it sounds funny....

the 13/30 included pass skel and other drills they were doing, it was in those drills that the new/unsure plays were used, and where the majority of the incomplete passes occured....

the actual stats from the scrimmage portion were.....

Micheal Spurlock - 8/14 for 104 yards 57% - 7.4 yards per attempt

Robert Lane - 6/11 for 70 yards 54% 6.36 yards per attempt

Ethan Flatt - 7/9 for 70 yards 77% 7.88 yards per attempt

we'll know about MS in 3 weeks

his leash will indeed be short ----- if he is struggling with execution for 3 to 4 series in a row, then I think we will see Lane or Flatt ----hopefully that will not be necessary

From what I have read, the offense the Rebs are running this season is much simpler, which will allow MS and the other players to just play football and not have to think so much. Last season, MS suffered from the stage fright jitters and hesitation in making decisions, resulting in the horrible play that we all saw. I do think this offense is more suited to Spurlock and Lane, as opposed to Flatt, and that the competition between those two will be a great thing for UM ----keeping both sharp. If the QB runs enough, he will be banged up some. If and when MS gets shaken up, Lane can come in and relieve him. Flatt will come in handy if one of the other two go down for most of or the entire season. Having three good QBs, instead of one great one, could be an advantage of sorts ---they are expendable and we can turn them loose to make plays.

I'm looking forward to seeing a better defense on the field. Nothing gets me fired up more than a good slobber knocking, dick in the dirt, hit that echos through the stadium. I have not seen that kind of a lick passed by a UM defender since the last UM v Bama game in Oxford when we threw the Tide players around like rag dolls in a WWF cage match. Now THAT is what I'm talkin about.
