Got my first one on my first Christmas (1971), a small brass one that I later took to the games. Did not have a handle and was not really loud but my Mom had it painted up nice. Got my first big bell in 1980, a sporting goods store there in Starkville, really loud. Also got a record that year of the old "Bulldog Blitz" song. My Mom used to wake me up for school every morning with that record playing and ringing that big bell...lol. John Bond, Billy Jackson, Johnny Cooks, Michael Haddix, the punt returner/WR whose name I forget, I was crazy about those teams back then.

What better thread for me to show up in?

Something went wrong on my webbmaster account. Did I get banned?
No, I changed email addresses and I must have typed in the wrong email address...didnt get any confirmation.

I figured I'd just come back as another life form.

P.S. Cowbells are for cows...

Webb, you ARE another life form. But, glad to see you back in any form. We haven't argued (or debated) in a while and I was having withdrawal symptoms. I can't even pick a fight with GH22 anymore. I served him a softball pitch down the middle on this thread and he dissed the cowbell ---- I still can't believe it.

Crow, Bigwater, and Swag, you guys just reaffirm "Smith"'s former observations about the cowbell and its meaning to state fans ---- all of you guys remember when you got your first cowbell and subsequent bells, almost to the exact date, and can tell stories about your bells' many adventures. I don't think the rest of the SEC quite appreciates the "tradition" and affection MSU fans have for their cowbells.

I say let em' ring. By the time college football strips all of its fan traditions away with PC run amuck, the fan spirit that makes college football what it is today and has been will be gone. No team is going to win big every year. And during those lean years when your team sucks, ya gotta have something to hold onto to keep the internal fires buring. God knows, as a UM fan post-1968, I should know as well as anyone.

Message to NCAA and to SEC: Leave the mascots, cowbells, marching bands, fight songs, etc ALONE and do your jobs ---- police college sports with a FAIR even hand, with fair and reasonable, consistent punishments for violations when warranted, and leave the game atmosphere to the schools.

I agree Po Monkey, as much as I love to beat Ole Miss at any sport, I hated seeing Col. Reb, Dixie, and the flags go away. I remember "Hammerhead", a RB from way back yonder, running around the stadium with a flag after a big win, did not seem to bother him one bit. Can't remember the team they beat or Hammerheads real name........

You had a good point until you insinuated that the NCAA was "fair and reasonable."

They aren't capable of anything.

Webb, you read way too much into my post. My intended insinuation was that doing their job as I described would be a change.

I don't think any of the punishments of the SEC schools in the last 10-15 years has been consistent, fair or reasonable, when compared to punishment for similar offenses at other schools. There seems to be an agenda against most of the SEC, while protection has been afforded to other schools such as FSU, Miami, Ohio State, Michigan, etc. etc. etc.

The cowbell arguement is one I won't take part in.

Ol "Hammerhead" was Steve Sloan's favorite player. Despite a few unforgettable characters like Hammerhead, Fourcade, and a handful of others, that era of UM football was quite forgettable. In a few more years, it will be permanently erased from my memory bank.

The bells shudda stayed. You got more of an excuse to get rid of the flags at Ole Miss than the cowbells at State. Now before I get creamed, I'm not advocating the loss of the traditions of Ole Miss. It was a perfect example of folks mindin' other folks business. If Ole Miss wants to wave Confederate flags, have Colonel Reb ride around with a sword laying down Yankees left and right, or have the band re-enact the first battle of Manasses during halftime, they oughta be able to do it. If it offended so many people, they oughta stay away. Nobody made them come to school in Oxford. If it offends other teams, don't play Ole Miss. Period. If it really did offend everybody, nobody would come to the games, nobody would play for Ole Miss, and nobody would play Ole Miss. The athletic budget would crumble and the school would have to withdraw from the SEC because nobody would have played them. Then the school would realize the error of its ways and institute the necessary changes on its own.

Banning the bells was ridiculous. At least the confederate flag really did offend some people. The cowbells just made it harder to play at State. Duh, correct me if I'm wrong, but a loud, hostile crowd is part of playing on the road, especially in the SEC. But...it was other SEC teams that complained and forced the league to take action, was it not? Either way, Po Monkey is right when he asserts that the league and the NCAA have plenty of other fish to fry before they need to get to "artificial noisemakers."
