OXFORD — Former North Carolina State receiver Richard Washington won't end up at Ole Miss.
Washington, a senior who enrolled at N.C. State three years ago as a partial academic qualifier, was denied admission to Ole Miss because he has not made enough academic progress toward a degree, school officials said. Coach Ed Orgeron confirmed Thursday Washington will not join the team.
Under NCAA academic guidelines, Washington would have needed to have completed 80 percent of his credits toward a degree to transfer to a Division I school.
"All of the things that needed to fall into place didn't," Orgeron said.
Washington announced last week he was leaving the Wolfpack and had planned to sign with the Rebels, where the receiver would have been reunited with ex-N.C. State offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone. Mazzone left N.C. State to become coordinator at Ole Miss.
Washington, a Fort Myers, Fla. native, caught 73 passes for 848 yards and eight touchdowns in two seasons at N.C. State.
