CELL PHONES...
just got a special notice from ATT that i have accumulated 2000 minutes of roll over time...
to be frank, i only use my cell phone for emergency situations and would not be caught in the bottoms of Muddy Creek with out it... after reading the topic of TOM it just made me realize what an important part of my gear it is.. i hope that each of you will invest in a package that will give you communication to the out-side world...
i spend most of my available time in the bottoms and would not leave home with-out it... feels like a security blanket to me..
i remenber getting our first home phone at the age of 12... ain't technoligy come a long way....
any one remember a time that a cell phone saved your day?????

Longest winch ever made!
8-9 seasons back a couple boys were out on Ft. Gibson lake in a rig way too small for the water they were traveling..20 degrees and 30+ winds..capsized and wound up cling to willows in 10'+ of water..one of them had a cell phone in a zip loc bag..called his wife who in turn got the rescue squad out to their location..could've been a grim situation otherwise.

Judge,
Cell phone's in my opinion are one of the most advanced inventions since the original of Mr. Bell. Me and my wife both carry one and thanks to being able to access the internet throught the cable we have no use for a land line any more. We cut it off about 4 mos. ago and have not missed it once.
I would not think of going into the wood without one, nor would I think of letting myt wife go shopping without one, with all the sick people in the world, "a security blanket" is underestamating it.

I got some advice from someone on this board on a good hunting spot so I went, he told not to go if it thaws you could stuck(me, not a four wheeler) of course I didn't listen. The whole walk out I'd look at my cell phone just to make sure I had a signal. I thought boy am I going to hear the Yankee jokes when I have to call a helicopter to pull my fat ass out this mud.
Learned two lessons that day,
1. Never leave w/out cell phone
2. Listen more

Dang right JPII could have been very bad! I'm gonna have me one before next year. I got into a very bad situtation 2 years ago. I was duck hunting by myself when i got into some mud, what we call quicksand actually it is silt but it has no bottom to it. the more you wiggle the deeper you go. I was hunting the waterway in the middle of the week. Only one on it I guess I stepped off the bank and was good hard footing made about five more and on the 6th I was up to my crotch in mud. I tried backing up but the more I moved the deeper i got. In a very short timeI was over my waist in mud, the water wasnt but about a foot and a half deep but it was creeping over my waders. I looked toward the channel I was about 150 yard off of it in a slough run. I knew that if someone had been comming by there was no way they would see me. I was really in a bad, bad situtation. I couldnt move and there was no bottom and no one around either. I have too admitt it men I was on the verge of a panic attack. i still hadnt put my decoys out and lucky I was hunting with 30 that day. I sat there for a minute and i came too me.If i can just get up on the bag. now dont get me wrong ive used dekes more than once to keep me from falling, but it still took a second for me too think of it. I pulled the bag as close to me as possible and started working my way up on them. Man that water was cold as it came over the top but there was no other way out of this situtation that I was in. I kept working until i could get my feet to come loose. I finally heaved myself up on the bag held on and walked on my knees back to where I had solid footing. I decide right then I was going to have me a cell phone. I hate too think of what might have happend if it wasnt for the ole decoy bag full of flambeau decoys that day. That's funny Yank.
After years of refusing to buy a cell phone, my job required I have one. I like to call my wife or my brother at work and let them listen to the "final approach" of a flock and the inevitable volley.

Cell Phones save lives everyday....Right when I graduated from college with my 1st degree...I went to work for the Mississippi Highway Patrol in Jackson...as a radio operator....One night while working the late shift...we got a call that a truck had hit another vehicle on I-20...well, we started getting more and more calls....turns out a big transporter truck got involved in the accident....turned out to be a 7 or 8 car pile up....we had to shut I-20 east bound doen.....A fwe people were killed but by all the calls we got from cell phones.....our troopers were able to get on lovcation quickly, and they knew what to expect, so cell phones saved lives thart night....Thanks God...but you should hear some of the calls we used to get...some people ar just plain disrespectful...had a fellow one day call in and said the guy in front of him was speeding and he wanted us to get a trooper out to stop the guy in front of him....I asked how fast the guy in front of him was going and he said 95......I asked how did he know that, and the fellow on the phone said because I am right behind him following him until a trooper pulls him over...some people are unbelievable!! Yeah Capt you wouldn't know where I got that advice would you?
That was 2 seasons ago, I didn't get real worried until my dog gave me the, " who's going take me when you die", look.
I too had to use my decoys from sinking it took about 2 hours to go 150 yards, I only thought I was in shape.
Seriously I try to walk about 2 miles a day and then make it 5 before season starts. I don't know if I would have made it if I hadn't done that.

Reminds me of when I was a kid about 12 or so fishing in a creek behind Mom and Dads house. I had walked in that creek a hundred times if one casting a Johnsons spoon in grass and catching creek bass. This paticular day I walked a slightly different route coming back down the creek in water about knee deep when suddenly I was in about waist deep and unable to walk. The more I struggled to get out the further I sank in silt or quicksand or whatever it was. By this time things were getting serious and I was chest deep in water. I dropped my rod and was in panic flailing at water when my hand hit something solid. About two feet in front of me was a stump under water. I got hold of stump and roots and whatever I could and finally pulled out. I lost my rod but felt really lucky even to this day to get out alive. No doubt the man upstairs was watching over me that day.

who offers the best coverage and pricing program for N. Ms, W. Tn, and E. Ark ?? Had Sprint before, but too many dead spots..Does Cingular wireless reach the remote spots?? Hate to get a 12 mo contract and have weak coverage..

Wireless phones are most definate the greatest invention of my lifetime. If you don't believe me ask the people of the last ice storm a couple of years ago when that was the only phone they had. If you remember the tornado in Pontotoc County last year, the cellular phones once again came in handy. I think that Cingular has the best coverage of any company around, but then they pay my bills since I work for them.

The "Gator hole" can be like that. You can get yourself into a very stinky, sinky, sucking mess. Here is what I have found works before your boots get sure enough stuck, - that is knee-walking. Yes, pull your feet up behind you and "walk" on your knees. That way, you spread your weight out by putting it on your knees, shins & boots. Believe it or not, you actually stay higher up. At least I did the two times I can recall having to use this trick.
The problem with cell phones, at least in our south delta area, is lack of coverage. I use Cellular South and there is a lot of dead area starting south of Redwood and extending up near Cary and Blanton. SOmetimes you can find an area of coverage just just above the Yazoo. With an analog only phone, I am told you get good reception. Not with digital, though. Does anyone else get reception in that area.
Quite frankly, that lack of reception comes in handy at times, though!

I have used centrytel for 12 years, but around the six mile lake area, I cannot get a signal unless I use the phone in my truck, where I have an antenna. Although I take it on boat trips in a ziploc, I am not sure that I would get enough signal to call if I had an emergency. I guess someone gets better coverage in this area than I do. I believe I roam to Cellular South while I an around Greenwood. Maybe I should be using Cellular South.
