Drug-related charge ends Rebel career for frosh LB

OXFORD — Ole Miss incoming freshman linebacker Wallace Bates was dismissed Friday from the football program for what coach Ed Orgeron deemed a violation of team rules.

Bates was kicked off the team three days after the February signee pleaded guilty in Lafayette County to possession of drug paraphernalia. Bates was arrested by university police around midnight on June 11 in a Brown Hall dorm room on the Ole Miss campus.

Court documents did not reveal what form of paraphernalia Bates had in his presence when he was arrested. But Ole Miss Capt. Bobby Black said Friday that Bates was in possession of a "blunt," a thick cigar often used to roll and smoke marijuana. Black declined to provide other details surrounding Bates' arrest.

Bates was ordered to pay $417 in fines and court costs for the misdemeanor charge.

Orgeron announced Bates' dismissal in a one- line prepared statement released through the school's athletic department Friday afternoon. Orgeron did not return messages left on his cell phone seeking comment on Friday. Attempts to reach Bates in Oxford and at his Woodland Hills, Calif., home were unsuccessful.

Bates was considered one of the top defensive recruits in Orgeron's first signing class. The 6-1, 210-pound linebacker originally signed with Oregon State in 2004 but failed to meet NCAA academic requirements for freshman eligibility. Bates sat out last season and was recruited to Ole Miss by former linebackers coach Charlie Camp, who had worked at Oregon State.

Camp resigned in January a day after his arrest on a DUI charge in Oxford.

Bates was an All-Region selection by SuperPrep Magazine in 2003 and was credited with 233 tackles over his junior and senior seasons at Taft High School.

Bates was the latest of at least 10 Ole Miss football players or coaches arrested since the summer of 2003. He is the fourth team member Orgeron has parted ways with since January because of an arrest, a violation of team rules or academic issues.
