Ivory-Billed Woodpecker?

Postby laduck » Fri Feb 22, 2002 6:41 pm

Last confrimed sighting: 1940s, Talulah, La.
Six bird experts who have spent the past month searching for an ivory-billed woodpecker in a Slidell area swamp said they didn't spot the bird.
Sponsored by Zeiss Sports Optics, the recent search was inspired by the reported sighting of a pair of ivory-billed woodpeckers in 1999 by David Kulivan, a LSU forestry graduate student who was hunting wild turkeys in the swamp at that time. His detailed account stood up to repeated questioning by bird experts.
Have any of you ever seen one? Also, if you did,, would you tell anyone? I have been in the woods all my life and have yet to see any strange birds. If I did, I probably would say anything about it. What do you all think? Jack

Ivory-Billed Woodpecker?

Man them thangs shore r sum good eatin'!* hehe

Actually I had a guy point out a bird in AR back in the 80's. I wasn't very old at the time, but I remember the guy making a big fuss about it and stating that he wasn't absolutley sure if it was an Ivory-Billed or Pileated Wood Pecker. Probably pileated if I were to guess.

*The proceeding was a joke. Whether or not it was is good taste is entirely up to the reader.

Ivory-Billed Woodpecker?

Postby walt333ms » Mon Feb 25, 2002 12:30 am

have hunted the same hardwood swamp on the mississippi side of the river since my father took me there in the middle 50's....

about 25 miles east of the singer track outside talulah la...the last sighting of the ivory bill 1949....

all dear hunters, duck hunters and turkey hunters in la, ms, ark...ect should take a few minutes to find out about the ivory and the pileated woodpeckers....just log in and search ivory bill woodpecker,,,after all if any are still left...we will be the ones to find them....

the ivory is(was) vrey much larger, not a pileated with an ivory bill, also the ivory flew in a much more level flight and did not fall in flight like the pileated,...

there are still some film of flight and call of the ivory that was taken in the 30's, that u can download....

hope you take the time to get more info...

take care walt and sam...
