Diamondbacks Call Up Former Diamond Dog Brandon Medders
06/21/2005
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Add pitcher Brandon Medders to the growing list of former Mississippi State University baseball players who have reached the Major Leagues.
Medders, a native of Tuscaloosa, Ala., was called up last weekend by the Arizona Diamondbacks and made his Major League debut June 20 with an inning of scoreless relief work in a Monday night game at San Francisco. He had compiled a 2-1 record with seven saves and a 1.80 earned run average in 27 relief appearances with Arizona¹s Class AAA Tucson club in the Pacific Coast League.
Arizona drafted Medders in the eighth round following his junior season at Mississippi State in 2001. During his two-year MSU career the former Tuscaloosa Hillcrest High School and Shelton State (Ala.) Community College standout posted a 7-4 record with a 3.21 earned run average. He notched six wins and six saves in 2001, helping lead Mississippi State to the 2001 SEC Baseball Tournament Championship in Hoover, Ala., and earning SEC Tournament All-tournament Team honors.
Medders becomes the 37th former Mississippi State player to play or coach in Major League Baseball and joins pitcher Matt Ginter (Detroit), first baseman Rafael Palmeiro (Baltimore) and manager Buck Showalter (Texas) as MSU's active former players currently in the big leagues.
Way to go B. Medders!

Adam contracted mono and never overcame it, so he retired, which got me worried about Lalor during the fall when he got it, need that arm for weekend rotation next season.
Knott has been up a couple of times, but his K's put him right back down. If he was in the american league he'd have a much better shot being a DH instead of in the outfield.
Chris George played from 90-92 I believe, played in the minors a few yrs and quit. Now there is a Chris George listed on the mlb site as playing for MSU in college, but it's an entirely different person.
Chap made his way to AAA pretty quick and was called up for about a week. Something has happened recently in that organization, and he's now back in A for whatever reason, possibly injury.

GINTER SENT DOWN TO MINORS
Just days after one former Mississippi State pitcher was called up to the major leagues, another ex-Bulldog was sent down to the minors. The Detroit Tigers sent reliever Matt Ginter to AAA Toledo Wednesday.
Ginter, who played for the Bulldogs from 1996 to 1999, was 0-0 with a 5.47 ERA in ten appearances this season.
Tigers manager Alan Trammell says the demotion wasn't entirely Ginter's fault. He says Ginter was used as a long reliever, but because the Tigers' starters have been effective, they haven't needed much help from the bullpen.
Ginter's demotion came days after right-handed pitcher Brandon Medders became the 37th former Mississippi State player to play or coach in the big leagues. Medders made his major-league debut Monday with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
