For those of you who think this has done anything to bring, healing, closure, or justice, you might want to rethink that position.
First, while this might appease the 10 people who actually care or remember this incident, it has reopened an old wound for a whole lot more. If he’s found guilty, the blacks and a few whites will be happy, but there will be a large group that’s been pushed even further away from unity with the black community. If unity and race relations are ever going to occur, the past is going to have to be forgotten, and this is NOT a step in that direction.
Second, very few people would even know about this incident if it hadn’t been dredged up by politicians trying to appease a minority group. The doctor himself mentioned that he was unaware of it until just recently. Closure is not achieved by reopening old wounds!
Finally, the question of justice. I don’t know if he’s guilty or not, and neither do any of you. All we know is what we have been told by the press, and we know how unbiased they are. How would anybody here like to know that their future depended on the memory of people from 40 years ago. It’s just not possible to get a fair trial that long after the fact. Just try to imagine what would happen today if you brought charges against one of our black brethren for something that was done 40 years ago. They would play the race card so fast it would make your head spin. People from Hilly Clinton, to Rev Jesse Jackson, to the NAACP would be screaming unfair, unfair, but because of a warped sense of guilt, THIS farce is OK!

what the fark
Gottahunt hit it on the head!!! Spoonie we seem to think along the same lines!
Now why should I have to work all my life and pay taxes for some able body citizen to ride the system that I am contributing to!! Hell when I can collect social security, they are telling me it won't be there!! HUMMMMM!! But are they telling them that welfare won't be around or free health care etc!! I don't think so!! The bottom line is that I didn't own a slave and I am sure there are no slaves from the civil war that are still with us today so why should I be punished!!! There was a segment on the news a year or so ago about a free public assisted living apartment complex(if you qualify)! The one stipulation to live rent free was to do 10hrs of community service a month cleaning up the neighborhood or the complex etc!!! They interviewed sseveral residents and they had the NERVE to say they shouldn't have to do that!! The HANDOUTS have to STOP or the cycle will never end!! They have been given all the tools and allocations to better themselves and refuse to do so for the most part!!! When will they appreciate something if they think it is owed to them??? NEVER!!!!
Cotten stated that there needs to be HIGH BURDEN OF PROOF to convict someone beyond a reasonable doubt!! Do you think for on minute that after 40years that peoples memories of the events can be 100% believable to convince the jury beyond a shadow of a doubt!! The evidence hasn't changed but too much time has passed to have a high enough burden of proof to convict this man!! I am not saying he didn't have anything to do with it but if he is convicted it just gives people more incentive to drag more crap up from the past and try and convict more 80 year old people!! Before you know it we are no further from moving on than before!! Before you know it 40 years has passed and we will be retrying OJ and MJ!! Boy I bet MJ would look rough at 80!
I know exactly how you feel whitelie. As a matter of fact I initially felt the same way about the Delay trial in '94. But what I found having attended that trial was more than enough proof had existed to convict Delay 30 years earlier. He had gotten off then due to his being white, not innocent. Also, there was new evidence being created over the 30 year period due to Delay bragging over and over and over about having murdered Medgar Evers. What an idiot!
As for OJ I would be tickled to see Californians evolve enough over time (as Mississippi has) to convict him of the murders regardless of how old he becomes. And while MJ can not be tried for this particular case again, I have a feeling this is not the end and he will eventually get what’s deserved.
If nothing else remember this: If we lower the burden of proof, that same incompetent corrupt JPD you were referring to that took forever to show up at PB the other day will be arresting you, family members and/or friends on trumped up charges because you are white. Thank GOD we live in America with our screwed up justice system which happens to be the best in the world!
P.S. Are you still tearing the cover off of that yellow ball with two hands on both sides?

I'm afraid if you would look hard enough this has allready begun and it is only going to get worse. They intend for us to pay for the sins of our forefathers!

I've been watching the Killen trial on court tv today. It is just as I expected it would be. These people don't care about how the trial turns out. All they can seem to talk about is how the blacks live in different neighborhoods, and the whites go to private schools. Then they have the nerve to complain because the jury did not get all choked up when Mrs. Chaney gave her testimony. This is not about justice it is about pollitics. They have gone as far as to twisting Mrs. Chaney's testimony right after I just got through hearing it. They need to carry their arses back to NY and stay the hell out of our business.

If they had done that 40 years ago, we wouldn't be having this farce to begin with!!!

Sun rise in the east.... and it sets up in the West, yes the sun rise in east baby, and it sets up in the west..... It's hard to tell, hard to tell, hard to tell, which one, which one I love best.....
seymore wrote:Second, the argument that blacks are all on welfare and use the system is an argument that I am not going to argue against as the statistics prove it. The question is why. I'm certainly no sociologist, but, look at the history. Blacks are just one generation removed from the civil rights movement. It could be argued that this generation is the first generation to have the same opportunities as whites. I would disagree with that and say it is at least one or two more generations down the road. So what do you expect?
What???? The reason they are all on welfare has nothing to do with "being one generation removed from civil rights". If I just had my civil rights given to me I sure as hell wouldn't waste it sittin' on the porch drinking a 40 and smokin' weed. And further more, do you think that the black people that helped restore these rights had this in mind when they worked so hard for black civil rights? They wanted black people to be able to hold the same jobs as whites, vote and be treated equal. The current generation could give a damn about a job PERIOD, much less work as hard as most of us do... and it has only become worse over time. The idea that eventually it will get better and more will start to work the further the generations are removed from the civil rights era is seriously flawed. They are making a perfectly good living relying the government and playing race card everything something goes their way, it's one excuse after tyhe other. I'm not making generalizations, but I think that goes for the majority of the black community.
You ask what do I expect? I expect for people to get off their asss and work and quit making excuese for themselves, regardless of the color of their skin.

There’s no doubt that the social security disability and welfare systems are each failures and both are horribly abused in the State of Mississippi. Most of the abusers in this state seem to be black.
There’s no doubt that the judicial system in this country can be manipulated.
There’s no doubt that if Killen is convicted, Jim Hood will try to use it for his political advantage.
There’s no doubt that the prosecution of this old civil rights murder case reopens old scars that all of us are sick of seeing.
There is no doubt that our statewide newspaper goes to extreme degrees of overkill at every opportunity to cover racially motivated stories.
There’s no doubt that certain citizens ought to come to the realization that skin color is not the reason why life doesn’t work the way they would like for it to, and that they can’t base every failure on their pigmentation.
…but it’s wrong to sweep a murder under the rug just because it happened forty years ago.
Apparently, the judicial system wasn’t working too well then, either. From what I have read, the jurors were locked at eleven to one in favor of convicting Killen, and the reason that the twelfth one couldn’t do it was that he was a preacher. The outcome was clearly out of step with the jury instructions, which no doubt told them to disregard their personal feelings and base their decision on the evidence. Instead, this juror decided to vote based on who the Defendant was, rather than what he did.
The issue in the Neshoba County Circuit Court is whether or not the man is guilty of murder. If the evidence shows he did it, let him rot in prison. If he didn’t, let him live the rest of his days in peace.
