I lived the case first hand. I grew up in Philadelphia and was a fourteen year old kid at the time. The Beatles had just come out and we were letting our hair grow to match our new idols. FBI agents were everywhere during that time. We couldn't go bowling or to the ballpark without seeing black suit, black government cars, and black fedora hats everywhere. I was at the dam when they uncovered the bodies on Olen Burrage's farm. It was about 5 miles from our fair cabin at the Neshoba County Fair. I knew most of the players first hand, as everyone does in a small town. Sorry that it happened in Philly or anywhere else for that matter , but most of the culprits were from Meridian. Locals have lived with this scar for a longtime and it won't go away. Its time for an end.

Monkey you sure can bust a bubble. It is not that they should get away with it but that all this is just rehashed all the time.
The players in all of these cases have had to live with the shame and hurt they have caused, but it is time for us to stop paying for there sins. And you know as a law professional that is exactly what we are doing and it is going to get worse.
I agree with you that the players should pay for this, but leave us out of it. I never killed a democrat, never owned a slave, and used to have many as close friends. That has all changed now, and I am not bowing down to them. I'm not starting a new branch of the KKK, but I don't have to put up with this poor pitiful me chit either.
My grandfather was an American Indian and they were given hell way before the damn blacks. He used to have to tell people he was from Mexico. Ain't that a Bitch! You don't see me trying to hang one of General Custers cusins do you. Just a thought.
Don't take me the wrong way as I think you are correct in your views also, but it is just time for all this chit to stop. And no I wouldn't want to go tell any of there family to go to hell either. Just to leave the rest of us alone and quit tryin to bump in to me on purpose when I have to go to the God forsaken WalMart.
Thats just my opinion, I could be wrong!
P.S. To answer your question. If someone did that to my family I would need a public defender, cause I'd FRAG THEIR booty!

The only way to "end it" or "put it behind us" is to do what is being done right now. Although a few will still say too little too late, most will agree that even late justice is better than no justice.
The criminal justice system is designed to provide punishment for crimes, as a means to a civilized society, and to prevent citizens from taking the law into their own hands to deliver "justice". The people who committed these horrible crimes were NEVER prosecuted under state law for murder or anything else. Absent action by the state, the federal government prosecuted many of the suspects for some mickey mouse civil rights violations (all they could do), which resulted in several convictions and jail time for the convicted (but, not the same time as would have resulted from state murder or conspiracy to murder convictions).
The families of the 3 young men who were murdered (and the black citizens at the church which led to events that transpired) are bigger folks than me, and much more forgiving. Had I been older and one of those young men been my son, my brother, my father, I am afraid that, in the absence of justice, I would have resorted to taking the law into my own hands. I cannot fathom the outrage and frustration that would have built up within the families of those victims. For them, what the state prosecution today offers is truly too little, too late, but all that the state can offer at this point.
I am proud of the state of MS and all the progress it has made in race relations since the civil rights struggles in the 60s. In many respects, MS is light years ahead of other areas of the country in this regard, particularly areas that have little or no diversity in the population. We still have work to do in this area, but we are moving in the right direction. Doing what we can to right some of these past crimes, against the very folks who committed those crimes, is part of this progress and hopefully reconciliation.
I try very hard to not be too judgmental of the white population who were adults in that era and indirectly contributed to the injustices and cruelty toward blacks, although not committing any acts of violence themselves ---- many were scared to do anything ---scared for their businesses, scared for their families, and scared of public scorn and ridicule----with good reason. As to those that committed and planned the acts of violence, and created this climate of terror for both black and white citizens, I have no sympathy for any of them, only scorn, disdain and a sense of embarassment for the bad rap that they created for the entire state. Do I care that any of them are now old and frail -----Nope ---about the same level of concern I have for the Taliban, al Quaida, and the prisoners of war in Gitmo ---as Clint Eastwood said in the movie "The Outlaw Josey Wales": "..buzzards and worms got to eat too".

WHOAAAA!!!
Wait just a minute!!! I hate to make this sound like a black vs. white issue but to some it is!! Now I know there are a bunch of folks who stradle both sides of the fence on this issue and say things to pasify both sides but it isn't what they really feel!! That was evident in the Ms. State Flag vote!! Look at all the Pro athelets that literally get away with murder!! Ray Allen, Ray Lewis, OJ etc etc!! Well when they are found innocent, you don't see the "whites" burning down businesses and flipping over cars and looting etc!!! But when someone like Rodney King that actually did commit a crime is beaten for resisting arrest and fighting with officers and leading them on a high speed chase that endangered innocent lives, the blacks hit the streets to tear everything up!! White or Black, right is right and wrong is wrong!!! The numbers don't lie!! Look at the statistics of race and how it is related to crime!! Not even close!! This stigma needs to die but blacks that were never slaves need to get over the idea that "WE" owe them everything cause they suffered!! GET A JOB and get off public assistance!! Not saying all are like that but boy the numbers are staggering and doesn't help them build a case!! I see this everday in the medical field!! They treat the emergency room like a free clinic!! It is for EMERGENCIES not for BS just cause you are on medicaid!!!! Enough of venting!!! Wait one more!!! They poor elderly lady in Jackson that was carjacked a month or so ago.... the black boys momma was on the news saying He was the victim cause the cops were rough with him!! The boy committed a crime against an 80 year old lady for Christ sake!! You didn't see Luke Woodams momma say he was innocent did ya!!! Bill Cosby was so right!!

PoMonkey, now c'mon. To bring this up again now smells like political motivation to me. Why else? Why now? What's new? There is no smoking gun, only "He said-she said" cirumstantial evidence that is 40+ years old. With only foggy senile memories, how can anyone in ANY similar situation get a fair trial? I'd hate to spend one night in jail based on hearsay, much less be convicted of murder.
If they've got better eveidence than that, well, then I missed it.
I'm not even attempting to addreess the other jillion issue's swirling around this sad moment in history.

Them ducks is wary. We now resume our regularly scheduled forum melee in progress.
Well I'll weigh in on this with my 2 cents.
First, Killen was tried, Federally for civil rights violations, and walked with a hung jury. 11-1 to convict with the hold out saying she couldn't convict a preacher. Put yourself in the position of the victim's families. I'd be pissed and I'm sure most of you would be.
Second, the argument that blacks are all on welfare and use the system is an argument that I am not going to argue against as the statistics prove it. The question is why. I'm certainly no sociologist, but, look at the history. Blacks are just one generation removed from the civil rights movement. It could be argued that this generation is the first generation to have the same opportunities as whites. I would disagree with that and say it is at least one or two more generations down the road. So what do you expect?
Bottom line is that what is being done in Philadelphia is not for our generation. These things have to be done, no matter how unpleasant, if we expect to reach a point where we have true equality. None of us will be alive to see if we achieve it because it will take probably another century. However, we are in a position to either be obstructionist and tear it down. Or we can look to the future for our children and our children's children.
Dang, my brain now hurts as it is not used to having to work on Saturday. I'm going fishing or work my dog. How long to hunting season.

Hambone, I'm sorry for screwing up the Josey Wales quote ---20 lashes for me with a wet noodle.
I guess some of us will just have to agree to disagree. I fail to see what Michael Jackson, OJ, Rodney King, welfare, or any of these other topics have to do with dispensing justice to known murderers who are still alive and remain free. Like I said, IMO, its never too late to do the right thing.
I have zero patience or tolerance for bullies ---and in this case murderers and terrorists who kept the entire state of MS in a shroud of fear for years. My father and my family were threatened by one of these idiots(Byron Delay Beckwith) from that time period when my father refused to join the "White Citizens Council" ---the 1st cousin and sanitized version of the KKK. I can assure you that had ol "Delay" laid one finger on my family, he would have never survived to sit through his trial a few years ago.
Maybe because of this and other things I saw growing up, I am a little more sensitive to these remaining loose ends that need to be tied up. If it were up to me, we would round up all of these murderers and conspirators that are still alive and free and publicy hang them all by noon tommorrow. Then, it would be over. How would that be for some swift "justice"? Certainly no worse than the crimes they perpetrated.

hey
The problem with this trial or the OJ or MJ trial is the "system" works better for the accused than for the real victims!! There are way too many loopholes in our justice system for anyone to get a "fair" trial!! The defense gets to hand select the jury to their LIKEN and definately have a distinct advantage over the prosecution!! Boy if it were just like the days of old.... hang em high!! That would get some criminals attention!! All these drug dealers, carjackers, robbers, thieves, rapists, and child molesters keep getting a slap on the wrist and told not to do it again or you will be punished!! We can't even convict criminals of crimes they commit today must less 40years ago!!

While the system sucks big time, it’s the best in the world. We must always error on the side of our citizens. Better 10 guilty criminals go free than for one innocent citizen to be convicted of a crime they did not commit. Overzealous prosecutors, politicians, and other government bureaucrats need a heavy burden of proof system. This system is one of the few reasons they aren’t completely out of control. MJ, OJ and all of the carjackers in the world should not scare us as much as having a “hang em high†system without this heavy burden of proof placed on power hungry bureaucrats.
As for Killen, prosecuted him. My guess is he’s guilty in some form or fashion and probably as stupid as Delay was; kept running that mouth. I sat through all but the first day of Delabeckwith’s last trial in 1994. His wife actually told me the Jews were putting fluoride in the water so our brains would be poisoned.
And the testimony I heard from witnesses against Delay made me sick at my stomach. My dad told me that my Grandfather (his Dad) was rolling over in his grave since he had attended one of Delay’s trails in the 60’s in support of him, and I’m there 30 years later hoping for a guilty verdict after hearing all of the sick crap this backwoods hillbilly redneck had said and done in his pitiful life.
Regardless of how many OJ’s and MJ’s that go free, we should be above the whining and hope for justice especially when the defendant is white and guilty. It’s what keeps us from being just as weak as the whiners everyone gripes about so much.

Ok I take back "Hang emHigh" for everyone but a definate message is being sent to the criminals that hey 1 in 10 of us might get convicted! The key being MIGHT! If this is the best justice system we have then we are in serious trouble!! Letting 10 guilty people go means that there is a higher % chance that I will be robbed or my child kidnapped or my wife raped!! Don't much care for those odds! I believe you might err on this side of the fence if it were your wife or your child that becomes a victim because our "system" doesn't work to protect the victims!! The repeat stats of criminals tells us that there IS a problem!! Crime gets higher everyday and there are more and more victims and it is just a matter of time before it happens to someone close to you if nothing is ever done!! Just look at the way JPD operates!! Would you feel safe living there and having your children attend public school there or have your wife work late in the evening in west Jackson!! I think not!! If something isn't done then it is just a matter of time before you can't run anymore!! A MESSAGE NEEDS TO BE SENT THAT IF YOU DO THE CRIME YOU MUST DO THE TIME!! WE CAN"T AFFORD TO LET 10 CRIMINALS FOR EVERY INNOCENT PERSON ACCUSED!! NOw for the loopholes... OJ was free before the trial ever started but I don't feel like getting into that!! MONEY won that case and just one loophole was they put more emphasis on Mark Furman saying the word #igger than the anything else!!! WHATEVER!!!!
