PAY RAISES FOR ELECTED OFFICIALS, AGENCY DIRECTORS, AND JUDG

Postby dedux » Wed Feb 06, 2002 3:32 pm

MISSISSIPPIANS SHOULD BE TOTALLY LIVID AT THE VERY THOUGHT OF ALLOWING THESE PEOPLE TO VOTE THEMSELVES ANOTHER PAY RAISE!!!

NO WONDER MISSISSIPPI IS THE "SCAB ON THE "turd-cutter" OF THIS NATION"!!!

IF THE PEOPLE OF THIS STATE CONTINUE TO ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN, THEN WE DESERVE TO BE TROMPED ON AND TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF!!!

PAY RAISES FOR ELECTED OFFICIALS, AGENCY DIRECTORS, AND JUDG

Postby judge jb » Thu Feb 07, 2002 10:36 am

speaking for Judges, we don't have the chance to vote ourselves a pay-raise.. each year a pay-raise is presented to the house, if it passes it goes before the senate for approval or rejection... i got my last raise in Oct. 1996 and was assured by Gov. Musgrove that it would be at least 2004 before a raise had any chance... elected officials, county wide, make less than most people think... we don't do it for the money, believe me, it ain't worth it... the only Perk in my job is the ability to schedule court around huntin season...haha...

Yeah, I can see why you'd be so upset that these elected officials need to make money in order to represent you. If you can keep their pay low enough, only rich folks can afford to be in public office! And we all know that is exactly who we want to represent us...someone who has absolutely no idea what the average Joe Schmuckatelly goes through in his daily life! Think about it...Would you rather pay someone to represent your interests who knows what your life is like, or have someone who grew up with an endowment and is doing it for the entertainment? I think, with rare exceptions, that we get a heck of a bargain in our elected officials. Really, would you like to listen to people like you complain every day, knowing it is your duty to represent them fairly, anyway?

My only gripe is that they got the raise while schools are threatened with closures due to underfunding. By law, school districts cannot operate with a deficit. Currently, 15-25 school districts are facing this issue. The state already has a 158 million dollar tax revenue shortfall.

teachers are the only ones who got raises in 2001.. just before 9-11 tragedy. a well deserved raise. but they don't need to fuss about conditions. that pay-raise took away from the school fund budget.. only the kids suffer....

My question is why are we having financial trouble in MS? A few years back our wise legislature told us that legalized gambling would put us on top! They said, "we better do this for the children". Well, where's the beef?

Where is the tobacco money???

I have been smoking for might near
30 years. I would love to see some
of my money spent on education.

That would be better than where it
has been going.

For the state to come out of the
woods, we need to educate the citzens.

Isn't the state legislature a part time job or am I mistaken. Hell, they have gotten so much done this year. They deserve something. A raise isn't exactly what I had in mind. Did you know MS now has an official toy? The teddy bear. That's right that was voted on. Medicaid is overspent, MDOT is low on funds, the schools are broke (talk of laying off teachers) I just don't think now is an appropriate time to vote an across the board pay increase except for Benny Thompson. He responsible for those smooth roads going into DNF. He should have to give money back for the fillings I lost riding down those crater fields.

judge jb, in answer to your above question, "Where did I hear it"? Real simple--
I read the newspaper. It has been front page
reading in the Clarion-Ledger for the past week. A WHOLE LOT OF FOLKS are really upset about the timing of the Legis. raising their salaries!!! Bring on the 'lasses and ants,
I assure you I've survived worst, my friend.
I stand by my opinion on this issue, and am even more agitated at the idea that a public servant can raise his/her own salary!!!

i understand. it hacks me off when you can vote yourself a raise yet hold a cloud over everyone else who depends on them to help you.
city alderman, county supervisors and state house and senate, are the only ones i know with this power. yet, everyone who works for a city, county or state can only get a raise with their vote of approval. looks bad when the most useless gets the bucks and the workers do with-out....

People are talking about all these pay raises. Did anyone hear about education getting cuts this year? Education is supposed to be taking something like a $700,000 cut this year, anyone heard anything about it? Funny we have casinos making hundred of millions each year in MS but education is getting the shaft.................#%@$@$%

Yall have probably heard this but they are trying to get a casino up here in Tishomingo County. It has failed once by petition and vote from the county voters but they are hard at it again. The big push they are making on it this time is the number of jobs it would make and that the taxes from the casino would help the economy. Oh let me throw this in during the vote on the casino the county was pretty much split on the vote I think it was something like 55%against 45%for so the band of indians are making a hard charge again about this.

I guess dedux is a man with a job making thousands more than the people who work for the state. I also disgree with a man who can vote himself a pay raise, but for a man or woman to get a pay raise and all state workers deserve one we should be glad. next time you want to bitch ask your state game warden or any state law officer what they make. The average 21000.00.
