Good Run for the Dogs

Postby Po Monkey Lounger » Sun Jun 05, 2005 11:06 pm

Despite the loss to Miami in the regional, it was a good run for the Dogs in the post-season.

After barely making it into the SEC tourney, the Dogs swept through and won the SEC tourney, winning four in a row. Then getting the 2nd seed at the regional in Miami and winning two was not a bad way to cap off an improbable end to a dissapointing and forgetable regular season for the Dogs.

Ron Polk was obviously right ---the Dogs were better than their record indicated, losing a lot of close games during the regular season due to the inability to get timely hits with runners in scoring position. When the hits started coming in the post season at the right times, the fortunes of the Dogs turned. However, due to the poor regular season, there was no hosting a regional, which makes a run to a Super Regional and beyond much more likely. Seeding is the key. But, valuable experience was gained for some of the young pups on the team.

So, a tip of the hat and congrats to the Dogs. There is always next year.

This is hindsight but kinda funny at the same time. The NCAA pushes the thinking of putting a #2 seed within 350 mi of their hometown to promote a better "competitive" regional and increase visitor attendance. Last time I checked 350 mi won't touch the distance from Starkville to Coral Gables. I'm not saying that the ncaa screwed us over, but we should've bee sent to a regional closer to home, even though this was probably the best regional to be in with there not really being one dominant team, state just couldn't string their hits together.

It could have been worse ---Dogs could have been sent to the Tulane Regional.

Tulane was/is the number one ranked team in the country.
