Postby Po Monkey Lounger » Sat Jun 04, 2005 7:25 pm

Rebs advance to championship round in winner's bracket.

Maloney pitched 5 innings; Head went the rest of the way getting the save.

Fowler to start next game. Cupps still available, as well as closer Pettway, and maybe a couple more innnings from Head if needed.

Looking good. :D 8)

Great shot by Presley, after intentional walk to Head. It was Presley's second homerun of the year, but a big one indeed.

Ole Miss 7, Oklahoma 3

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) -- Mark Wright hit a two-run homer in the sixth, Stephen Head pitched four strong innings of relief and Mississippi beat Oklahoma 7-3 in the Oxford Regional on Saturday night.

Oklahoma scored three runs in the fifth and led 3-2. But Head led off the next inning with a walk and Wright followed with a drive to center field off Steven Guerra to put Ole Miss on top to stay.

Alex Presley, who pinch-ran for Wright in the eighth, gave the Rebels some breathing room with his second homer of the season - a three-run blast in the ninth off Oklahoma closer Will Savage.

Ole Miss needed it. Oklahoma brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the ninth, loading the bases on a walk to Kody Kaiser, a single by Freddy Rodriguez and an error by shortstop Zack Cozart.

Head then struck out Eric Thornton and Russell Raley to seal his seventh save.

Wright and Presley finished with three RBIs apiece for the Rebels (46-18), who advanced to the regional championship Sunday. Oklahoma (34-25) plays Maine earlier that day with the winner facing Ole Miss.

One day after Mark Holliman threw a six-hit shutout against Maine, Matt Maloney (8-2) was steady through four innings until the Sooners finally figured him out.

Oklahoma scored three runs in that inning and snapped the Rebels' streak of 16 consecutive scoreless innings in the regional.

No. 9 hitter Chuckie Caulfield led off the fifth with his second homer of the season, and Raley added a two-run single to help the Sooners rally from a 2-0 deficit and give them a short-lived lead.

Ole Miss led 2-0 after scoring single runs off Guerra in the first and fourth innings. Head doubled home Chris Coghlan in the first and then scored three innings later on Wright's double down the third-base line.

Guerra (5-6) allowed four runs on six hits in five innings.
