I have a 5 year old Choclate lab...Big block head, weight about 110lb.s . He has some retrieving skills but not enough to take to the hunt. Do you think it is still possible to get him trained well enough to go?

you sure can if you will work him. the best retriever i have hunted with never got of the side-walk until he was 5 or 6... sometimes it is easier to train an older dog than a pup...not always the case... good luck and give him a chance..

I have worked with young and old dogs I have not seen a difference in either some dogs respond better at a younger age, where some dogs do better at a older age alot of it is up to the dog, and how much time you are willing to work the dog.
Look at animals that are on movies and T.V. shows most of them are animal out of the pound that are several years old.
The answer to your question is yes. I am getting ready to start working a 2 year old female choclate lab. I have my work cut out for me also she is very high strung. I also love a challenge.

Good luck,

Its possible. Its not likely either of you either of you will be happy with the results. Throw any time tables you have (or might have read) out the window, and be preapred to work at that dogs pace. Even then, odds are, the dog hasn't learned to learn, or has the work ethic, to make either of you very happy with what you are going to get out of it.
If you're serious about it, see if there isnt a way you can become a 2 dog home. If that totally isnt a possibilty, take your time and be happy with whutever you manage. travis

There is no better training than in a flooded field where the dog can see all the birds that go down. Shooting doves threw the year is a great way to work and train your dog. I think dove season closes for all of ya'll til Sept.
Good Luck!!!

B4Tenn, I know you can train a big block headed dog. I hope everything is going well in the far East.
