Precisely why when dogs go mad they should be distroyed immediately. Your Dad should have gotten his pistol -not a leash. If you wait 10 days then it gets hard to do the right thing - particularly if the behavior improves. Remember a dog is a dog, and no human should suffer unjustly, regardless of the condition of the dog.
I'm going through this crap right now with my family over a catahoula (a bad breed for sure). Bottom line: a dog bites me or my kids it is a DEAD DOG as soon as I can get the ability to put it down. And I'll accept the consequences of that.
I sympathize with anyone who has to lose their pet to such extreme measures, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Nor would I enjoy having to kill a dog.

Dog Attack
I went through the similar circumstance about 4 yrs ago. MY father in law aquired a weenie dog from my wifes first cousin. The dog had bitten his son and they were not sure why they though their son might have been aggevating the dog while he was eating so my father in law took the dog home with him, my 2 sons had been playing with the dog for about a month or so when they went to visit, no problem with the dog. He played with them all the time. One sunday when they were visiting them my father in law another man and my other son were standing on the carport, the boys had been playing with the dog all afternoon same as always. The dog comes across the yard comes up to my 4 year old ( his age then)and jumps on him knocks him down and procceds to bite him in the face. MY father in law kicked the dog off of him and grabbed my son up checked him out. He did have some puncture wounds to the side of his face. He then went in the house and came back out with the gun and shoots him right between the ears as my son told me when he came home that afternoon. He took the dog to the vet the next day and told them what had happend. They sent the dog to Jackson to have him checked out for rabies. I called the vet for the next week and ask them if they had gottn the result back. well on thursday that week I got really pissed about them not having the test result yet. So I called the office in Jackson and asked what the test results were. They told me first that they had not checked the dog yet for rabies Then they told me too hold on and the woman came back on the phone and told me that they did have the results tuesday. I asked them why they had not gotten in touch with the vet to tell them of the results. All I got was a bunch of reterric on how far they were behind and they must have overlooked it. I asked them If the vet had turned in that the dog had bitten someone and they told me that they had. So then I asked them how in the hell they had not contacted the vet with the results and that me and my family were worried about it and that if the dog had have had rabies that my son would have had it for nearly a week and the fact that I had too call them to get the results. They gave me the same old reteric that they had earlier and I completely lost it. I told them that they were sorry as hell and didnt call because they didnt give a damn because it wasnt their child who had gotten bit. The woman hung up on me. I called the vet after that and told them that the dog had been tested and he was negative for rabies. The woman @ the vets office got pissed and told me that the dog should not have been killed that wwe should have brought it in and had them check it first. I quickly told her that if my dog for no reason had bitten my child her child or anyones child I would kill it immediatly also and I would'nt give a rats axx if I had paid a 1000.00 dollars for it. He would have been shot right then and there no questions asked. I dont know why the dog bit my son and will never know but my thinking on a dog biting somone for no reason is If he does it once he will do it again, and I'm not gonna take any chances. My wife cousin called and apologized for what the dog had done and told me that if he had even though the dog had bitten his son for no reason as he did mine he would have NOT gotten a second chance to do it again. My son loves dogs now and has no fear of them he loves animals and doesnt remeber alot of what happend to him. I guess we got lucky that he wasnt hurt any worse than he was.........Mike

Sorry to hear all about all those unfortunate stories.. I agree, there is no place for a dog that bites, mine included.

Dogs will be dogs and it sounds like this pet contrated something and snapped. Could be hormones due to the bitch in heat..there is no telling why. I think that the safest bet is a lab or golden and females at that. I will never own another male dog. The only draw back is that females typically don't last as long based on my experience(I don't know why).
My wife had a long haired little mexican dog - Chihuahua - named gizmo. He was the meanest little SOB on 4 legs. Thank God he only weighed 4 pounds. He became very agressive when my son was born and tried to bite him when he was 4 months old. A 4 pound dog flies like a football through the upright with a well placed boot. Needless to say - I never grew too attached to the dog and that made it easy to get rid of him. When my golden would go into heat - he would just go nuts..peed on everything and humped anything that was at least 2 inches tall. I can only guess what would have happened if he had been a large dog.
I am sorry to hear you had to put your dog down - that sucks no matter what the circumstances are. Get a golden female and you will not have problems with her. Shake it off and start over. Glad no one was hurt too bad.
