Sorefeet or other diggers

Postby tunica du4u » Sun May 08, 2005 1:37 pm

Any idea on this? Benny & I found this plowing up a garden spot for my Mom today. They live on the south end of Beaver Dam on a rise. Definately not a tusk, well preserved on 1 side some age cracking on other 2 sides. we thinks a bear claw :?:

Cool find! It looks like a claw. Very good condition too. Most bone type materials don't age that well. Bone gets very calky and crumbles. It could have been a pendant. I don't see any holes drilled in it but maybe the knuckle end was broken off? The ancients often wore claws/teeth around their neck.

i'm lookin at a quarter right here, i'm wondering if hte pictures maybe are making us think the claw is bigger than it really is.... Never seen a grizzly claw up close though, other than a few mounted ones, i would say it's probably close to the right size.

the quarter was put there to reference the size of the claw. A quarter is 1" in diameter (.955). as you can see 2 quarters could be placed inside the arch of the claw (it measured 2"), while the outside leading edge of the claw measured 3". i may be wrong but it appears the claw is broken off below the "knuckle" of the claw basically meaning this would be the part that "stuck out". when you think about it like that and have it in your hand, it's a big booty claw

From the location you described, is it a possiblity it is a talon from a Bald Eagle? :?
