College football, especially the presidents, have always been against a playoff tournament. Their reasoning is that these are student-athletes. Stop laughing and hear me out.
These players have to do things like go to class, study for exams, and take exams at the end of football season. Having to play all the extra games would hurt the players, especially academically, since the tournament would have to start soon after the regular season ended. OK...but the SEC, ACC, and Big XII already play league championship games. There will soon be a twelve game regular season. And now we hear that the BCS is going to add a fifth game. But what about studying for exams?
I don't think that college football players should be paid. But I also think it is the most extreme form of hypocrisy for the NCAA and the college presidents to rule out a playoff because they're afraid of missing out on the cash cow that are the bowl games while using the classroom success of the players as a fig leaf for their intentions.
