GC's Top Ten List

Postby GulfCoast » Thu Jan 31, 2002 8:18 pm

This is one that I just had to get off my chest. Perhaps it is because this has not been the best duck season on record, I have seen things from "hunters" that made my skin crawl this year. Like seeing 2 SUV’s full of guys from Florida and a “guide” poach some land next to my lease and shoot 211 times at ducks out of range (Seriously, I counted the “bangs” from where I was hunting). We did not know they were poaching until later, when we helped the warden pick up thier beer cans. Then I found out from other guys in my lease that the same group also did it the DAY BEFORE, TOO.

I also saw a “guide” switch to a turkey choke and 3.5" BBB's to water whack a hen sitting 60 yards away outside the decoys to “be sure to have something to take back.” (It was not any of the guides on this board). I could go on and on with the sad stories from this year. This has led me to my top ten list. It is up to y’all to figure out how many of these it takes to make you a wanna be.....sorry if this
offends anyone (yeah right):

GULFCOAST’S TOP TEN SIGNS OF A WANNA BE DUCK HUNTER:

1) Looks down on another duck hunter because the other’s equipment is not expensive enough or the right “name brand.”

2) Has 2 lanyards full of shiny acrylic calls, but still sounds like a party horn. (Not that I sound that great). And NEVER QUITS HIGHBALLING (or whatever he thinks that noise he is making is supposed to be).

3) Water whacks hens.

4) Consistently “skybusts” and “treetops” ducks.

5) Totally new, color coordinated matching camo on clothes, wader, gun, and hat but NO MUD TO BE FOUND ANYWHERE!

6) Refuses to chase down a cripple or leaves a duck in the field because “its gonna be to hard to get to it.”

7) “Claims” ducks that he knows he never hit.

8) Refers to ducks other than mallards as “trash ducks” and wants to give away the meat rather than clean them.

9) Gripes constantly about someone else’s dog.

10) Drinks any alcohol before or during a hunt, or goes back out to hunt after drinking.

BONUS
11) Takes more than 1 box of shells FOR ANY REASON.

O.K., I feel better now.

SS,
You can hunt 40 years and you'll still piss somebody off. Use common sense pay attention to what's going on around you and you'll be fine. I'm sure GC would admit he still learns something new every season(and I mean something usefull)
How long before next duck season??

12: ready to leave early if not seeing alot of ducks.

13: would rather try to skyblast than try to pull the birds in a little closer.

14: ready to leave if it starts raining, doesn't want to get wet.

Gulfcoast, good post. My partner and I have been hunting public land for over 20 yrs and we've seen it all. An example, last year we had 3 teenagers on one side of us, skybusting and hollering all morning. Then on the other side we had guys who shot at anything that moved. We had a crane come over our dekes and head toward the guys behind us. My buddy said "watch this, they'll shoot it. They did. This year after opening weekend we saw no one. This year should separate the wanabe's from the true duck hunter. Again, thanks for letting me vent.

All we need is a few more tough seasons to weed out the wananabs and then we can have to ourselfs again. (Remember the low populations in the 80's?).

good post G C. theres alot of public places I dont or wont hunt much anymore except during the week because of unethical and ppl that dont have any edicate or respect for anyone but themselves. And believe me and you all know there's a bunch of em out there. The only advice I can give to anyone just starting out in this sport is treat other as you want to be treated. If someone gets to you hole first dont wade through their deks and throw yours 30yds from them have a backup spot to go too. Skyblasters I cannot stand I was glad when they put the 15 shell limit on the Tenn_tomwaterway. I have had some wannabes get pissed off enough because, they just took the call outta the box sounded like a laffing duck when the would call. Have the ducks comming in on our dekes and fires shot 100 yds away just to flare em, or squeal there calls. some one almost took a axx beating that morning..... me or them one,...... anyway good post GC glad to see it. 15) Hunting the Wax for the first time and coming to the landing seeing over 30 pintail floating in the water on the way to the landing cause there was a warden. Then the next day packing up camp and stopping at the dumpster and counting 90 ducks in it uncleaned just sitting there to go to waste and getting a "well get on it next week" from the LADW&F. If you can't identify it then don't shoot it for Christ's sake. Still makes me real sick and real mad to think about it.

Well, I fit in there on a couple GC.

I know my duck call sounds like a party horn, therefore it stays in the truck. The guys I hunt with know how to blow a duck call, so noo need for me to get out there and sound like a junior high band practice. But I give it heck in my truck, one day I'll show them.

One day of the year all my camo matches, the morning of December 26th. I look like a bright, shiny, new topwater. My wife even bought me one of those nice floppy brimmed hats. I did not have the heart to tell her, so it is jammed under the front seat of my truck. Did not want to get shot with the new gun she bought me.

You guys are great, this is the first thing I do when I get to work every morning. And then I check back during the day to find out what everyone is up to. As close as I am to New Orleans, the Saints have burnt me out on "NEXT YEAR". Seem to hear that EVERY year from them. I hope everyone enjoyed the slow duck season and look forward to getting back after em.

hey trebla got to admit your honest about it. just keep practicing or go by yourself some cause a duck call in the house or truck aint gonna sound the same out on the water. If you fish take it with ya and practice out there during the summer. As for the hat crumple it wash it and stomp on it and make it your own.You may get made fun of about it but at least it wont look like everybody elses. Hope you had a good season and a better one next year..........
