Ervin denies tabloid report he will transfer from MSU

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State point guard Gary Ervin has not decided to transfer, he said today, disputing reports by a New York City tabloid.

"I'm just thinking about it, that's all," said Ervin, who averaged 7.4 points and 4.7 assists as the starter this season. "It's none of that, 'I'm definitely transferring stuff.' None of that."

In Tuesday's editions of the New York Daily News, Ervin is quoted as saying, "It just didn't work out, (coach Rick Stansbury) is a big man coach. I just need to go somewhere else to continue to develop."

Ervin, who is from New York, said he was misquoted.

"(The reporter) probably misunderstood me," said Ervin, who received a frantic call this morning from his uncle in New York who read the article and wanted to know when he had made up his mind. "I haven't decided yet."

New York Daily News reporter Kristie Ackert did not immediately return a phone call to her office.

Ervin confirmed to The Clarion-Ledger Monday that he did request and receive permission from the MSU compliance staff to talk to other schools about the possibility of transferring. But he said he hadn't even talked to any coaches yet.

He said he is waiting until after meeting next week with Stansbury until he makes his decision.

"I need some leeway," Ervin said Monday. "Everybody is entitled to make mistakes."

If he is not sure if he wants to be at State, he needs to go. You just don't leave your team and coach hanging. Stansberry needs to tell Ervin it would be in his best if he transfered because he will ride the pine next season and be done with him. If the SOB could shoot, maybe he could get a back up roll with the Harlem Globetrotter. We are better off without him. Hey Stans, confer with Coach Croom on such matters.
