Snipe Huntin

This is not a joke. How many of you boys and girls have been on a real snipe hunt? I don't mean shooting a few incidentally while hunting something else. I mean going out with the purpose of getting after those little devils. There are a good many down here in the marsh. However, the best hunts that I have been on were in low areas of rolling pastures. It was a lot of fun and you can sure burn some shellls. Jack

some of my most memorible hunts were for woodcocks {snipe} in the bottoms of Hurricane bottom... them birds is like ducks and are migratory... if you can catch them just right it is as good as any Quail hunt... i found the secret to success is to let them head skyward and shoot them when they plane out... a pretty tasty treat... you sure brought back a lot of memories...

We shoot them regualy, either simply flying over, or go kick them up. Ive got a dozen snipe decoys a boy from canda sent me, but never got around to using them. travis

I KNEW THEY EXISTED BUT DONT KNOW WHAT ONE LOOKS LIKE IS THERE A WEB SITE THAT I COULD GET A PIC FROM I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW THEY LOOK INCASE I SEE ONE.

I see wood cocks all the time down in the Big Black river bottoms. I dont know if I have actually seen a snipe. There is a difference. I think the only difference is the size. Anyway there are lots of guys down here that live for it when the snipe hunting is right. Ducks are hard enough to deal with. I dont need any more hobbies.

Yeah, there IS a difference between snipe and woodcock. I use a 20ga SKB 280 'quail' double bored cylinder and cylinder, one box of 2-3/4dr 1oz 8's, 1 Brittany Spaniel with a bell, briar pants, one flusher and one other gunner on woodcock.

For snipe, I use a Perazzi O/U trap gun (shoots 18" high at 40 yds) bored IM/XF, a case of 3-3/4dram 1-1/4oz 8's, hip boots, and a pillow case (for carryin' dead birds). That's some of the most challenging shootin' there is. If you can see the bird when you pull the trigger, you'll see your shot pattern spray the water about 15yds behind the bird. Use a trap gun (to shoot above the bird) and pull thru the lin o'flight to get near the target. It's a lotta fun! One tip.....walk into the wind so when the bird flushes, he's fightin' the wind. You'll need all the help you can get with these little 'suckers'!

If you don't have a trap gun, take your barrel off your gun and find you a tractor tire (front tire). [img]images/smiles/icon_sad.gif[/img](Huh?) If you still have trouble hittin a snipe.....go back to the tractor tire and whack it some mo....'til you get it right! Long barrels (34") with no rib work best! [Or you can just change the drop and pitch of your stock.] [img]images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif[/img]
