shooting instructors
well i have duck hunting about 5 years and am sick of missing ducks. i was wondering if anyone here could recomend a good way to get some shooting instruction. i know that one of my problems is i am right handed with a left dominate eye but it goes further than that. i realize it wont do me any good this year but want to be ready for next year. i just have a serious problem in my style i guess. i purchased a nice do-all double trap thrower and have even read some books but i think i need some hands on instruction. any ideas are welcome posted or emailed

DD, I am also a right handed shooter, but left eye dominant. I have always closed my left eye when shooting and never realized that I was left eye dominant until a few months ago when I tried shooting with both eyes open. I'm guessing that you are not following all the way through with the gun after the shot, whether you are shooting at doves, ducks, traps, or clays. About 95% of all misses occur when shooting behind the bird. Your gun could also be a major factor, whether or not it is fitted for you. GC and Delta Duck can give you a lot of info about this.

Here ya go Dixiedogger. Hope these two websites help -
http://www.fieldandstream.com/blacks/
Click on "instruction" under Wing & Clay.
http://www.nssa-nsca.com/nsca/index.htm
Click on "NSCA Instructors" under NSCA General Information.
Have you tried scotch tape on the lens of your shooting glasses? It would go over the dominate eye of a cross dominate shooter.

If you want a certified shooting "instructor" in Mississippi, I suggest that you should get in touch with Joel Fike in Lucedale, MS. He can probably help you out. He is set up to teach at his range. Dan Carlisle is the best I have ever seen, or taken from, but he AINT for the thin skinned or faint of heart.
Or, a much cheaper solution is to start frequenting your local trap/skeet club, and shoot as often as you can WITH YOUR DUCK GUN. Resist the urge to get a target gun, which some folks will tell you that you need. (It is REALLY FUN to punk out some guy with a custom Perazzi and a big ole honkin attitude in a shootoff with your beat up camo duck gun, trust me). Try to shoot skeet and 5 stand at first, then a little trap. When you get comfortable with low gun wobble scrap, you can hold your head up with any group of shooters.
I am not sure what area of the state you are in, so I can't suggest any place specific. Depending on where you are, you could probably get some volunteers to shoot a few rounds with you, if you talk nice to 'em. There are several very top notch target/duck shooters on this board, Anatadae in Starkville, Delta Duck in Tunica, Scooter in Tupelo, I forget where Model 12 is, and there probably many others who I know from shooting and just don't associate with thier "screen name" from MSDucks. If you are in my part of the world, I would be glad to shoot a few rounds with you, although you would not be able to do much better than doing some shooting with one of the above gentlemen.
Also, consider coming to one of the "msducks" cookouts that Anatadae puts on at the Starkville Gun Club. You can shoot, eat, shoot some more, and hang out with characters like me, Booger, Anat, GH 22 Featherduster, and other assorted loonies.
Hope some of that was useful.

thanks for the posts guys. i have tried the tape on one eye trick and it works ok but i cant stand wearing glasses and having my left eye coveren gives me a bad headache i dont know if i could get used to this over time or not. gulf coast i can almost garantee you are not close to me from your screen name because i can almost spit on memphis from where i live but thanks for the offer. do any of you southaven/ desoto county boys know of a gun club that has a good range. i think all the ranges in memphis are didicated to self protection training wonder why? If you dont mind a small drive you should check out M.S.S.A. just off Canada Rd. They have 6 skeet ranges a 5 stand range, and I think 5 trap fields. They also have a awesome sporting clays range. Without giving away all my secrets, I am a certified firearms instructor (not in it for money) if you ever want any help or advice I'd be glad to do what I can. The cool thing about this place is that it's just a bunch of good guys who enjoy shooting, not a bunch of thugs with handgun permits practicing with their tech 9's. (the way it is in most Memphis indoor "self defense" ranges)

here is some real simple, quick and cheep advice...
requirments....no 7 shot 3-boxes low brass...
case of skeet....
3-good friends...
3 hand held skeet throwers
1-lake....lots of room..
practice pulling the gun up....make sure that the forearm, the sholder, and your cheek is always held in exactly the same position...everytime...no matter what clothes....practice this over and over and over...even at your house with no bullets...
move mostly at the waist...like a gun turrent...if you are moving the gun with your arms...you will never catch up to the target....
now that u are comfortable with the position and movement of the gun...load one bullet at a time.... you can get to two and three after you hit about 5 singles in a row..
the trick is have your friends to throw the skeet out front, fast and very low to the water....you can now tell where every shot is ...in front ..behind, ect..
will be surprised how fast your old habits will change..and it is fun...
good luck...

The range at the Grand Casino is one of the best in the State, You can't go wrong there, And I have to agree with No Angel, it ain't to pricey, expecially considering what you get.
About two or three years ago I was sitting in my blind opening morning and not having much luck needless to say but someone just to my left probably a mile or two was shooting the h*** out of them so I decided to ride over and see how who ever it was did, needless to say that is when I found out about the skeet range, it was not open yet but a couple of the workers and a few guys from the Golf Course were out praticing . They have a nice set up. Check it out if you get a chance.

Go to The Grand Casino, the Willows is a top knotch range, that offers everything. They have instruction that cost about $65 per hour. As you know, the more you shoot, the better you become, i know we hit the range
quite often in the summer after the fishing
has gone to pot.

I will be glad to shoot with you at the willows sporting clays. I might be able to give you a few pointers, but my ability to shoot is my God given good hand eye cordination. If you come up here in Feb. we will go and try to out smart those snows.

first learn to shoot with a 28-30 inch barrel. The additional weight will make you follow through better. Afterwards if you must go to one of those dangerous short barrel guns you will be a better shot than starting out with one.
