WHAT A YEAR!!!

I hunt in big camp outside of greenwood, and for the last two years, we have been way down on our harvest just like everyone else. I am sure again that the us fish and wildlife will come back and say that harvests were up again for this year. Even though you don't know 10 people that have killed a limit all year. Then DU will come back in the fall and say record numbers reported again this year. Even though there has been no snow to speak of in the Midwest or the miss. flwy breeding grounds so far. We are in for another year of bad hatch conditions if we don't get snow up there quick. I am sick of everyone being wrong on these reports. I Know the weather held up most of the ducks, but I have friends that went to Canada hunting this year. Went to the same places that they have been going for years. All the guides up there are saying, where the hell are the ducks. I think that there just aren't as many aroung anymore. Just my bichin. I hope everyone squeezes out a good hunt in these last few days of this aweful season. May we never have another one like this. This my worst in 20 years.

I was in misery myself about the sorry season until last week. It turned around for us in the Delta for the last 2 weeks. Lots for ducks, but situation changed daily. We had to keep changing locations to stay with the ducks. The green heads were there, but many more pintails that we have ever seen in the past. Very few gadwalls and no widgen. A very strange year, but finally killed some ducks.

Not bragging or anything, but me and my buddy had a pretty good year, with the exception of the early season. I killed a...well, I don't know what it is. I think it is a shoveler/mallard cross.

WOW! That is one ugly duck! Looks like he was hatched on a sewage pond! Just Kidding! He does kind of look like a Spoony/Mallard mix.

That is awesome, I hope you got it mounted. You should check with the Miss. game and fish. It might be a Mall./Pintail cross with that white chest. I think that is a fairly common cross breed. I have only seen a handfull of crossbreeds in my life, you should get it mounted, congrats.

Interesting hybrid. Over the last several years, we have taken three or 4 black duck/mallard crosses, which are relatively common. In 1997, I shot a mallard/widgeon hybrid. The strangest one I've seen was a mallard/pintail/gadwall. Our theory was that a mallard bred with a pintail and the next year, one of the results of that pair bred with a gadwall. Talk about "multicultural"....They make very interesting additions to my collection.

I honestly couldn't tell you what it is. It looks like it has so many different kinds of ducks in it. But it has a chocolate milk colored chest, and a white neck where the white goes all the way up to it's bill under the head. The green on his head goes all the way down the middle of his back. Black speculum, very dark colorations on top of him, but has no sprig at all. Damdest duck I've ever seen. And yes, he is on my wall right now. I'm as happy as a puppy with two peters.

That bill on that duck looks particularly funky. I posted a pic of one I shot last year that we all finally decided was a mallard/pin hybrid hen. That is the only hybrid that I have ever shot. Although from what y'all are saying they are not totally uncommon.

Check this site out -

It may answer you question on what it is. It may have hybridized with a mallard cause the feet and bill still ain't quite the same.

That's a Cull(sp?) if I've ever seen one! Damn that's an ugly duck. Thanks for getting him out of the gene pool!

Alright WNE Driver, that duck was flying when I shot it. You know them farm raised ducks can't fly a lick, I used to have a ton of them on my ponds. This one came in with about 60 mallards. Think I'm going to take it up to State and see what the Thompson Hall people think it is, just for the giggles. GC, bill and feet are funky, feet look like a snow goose, bill like a hen's bill, only has markings on it like a pinnie has.
