Panthers in Mississippi?

have a family member that lives off of hiway 35.... just south of charleston... has seen and heard panthers several times.... him and another were int he woods deer hunting and came across a hind quarter hanging up in the Y of a tree....... needless to say.. they got on outta there.

Never seen a panther, but saw at least five bears four or five years ago in bolivar county. Three had radio collars. Haven't seen one since.

quackers you could be right all i couldn't see that well cuz i had a bunch of tidies in my face at the time the cougar crossed the rd....

i have seen a bear.. i was on beualh island hunting club near rosedale... saw one on the ark side of log-loader shoot.... black bear...

i saw one about 6 or 7 years ago on a really cold mourning. he crossed a power line and i shot at him but missed. didn't know at the time it was such a big fine for killing one. but as far as bears go my room mate got one on camera last year the day before rifle season opened. did look big maybe about 100 lbs or so. it was right out side of forest off of hwy 35. about 1 mile from where i saw the panther.

Four members of my family, my wife, a brother, and another brother with my son have seen panthers. One in the late 70's on the DeLoach place at Phillip while deer hunting and the two other sightings on Carrollton Road south of Grenada between Grenada and Jefferson in Carroll County. Three separate sightings and I believe them.

My father in law, who is not remotely given to exageration, was a farmer most of his life in Panola County. He will look you in the eye and tell you he has seen a panther 4 or 5 times. They were all brown according to him.

I've heard rumors of cougars/panthers being seen or heard in the areas south and west of Holcomb since I was a kid. But until someone can confirm a track siting I will dismiss them as....rumors.

For what it is worth, I was at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans this past weekend and they have a cougar a couple of bears included in their native Louisiana exhibit...then again, they also have a "swamp monster". If you've never been, I highly recommend it.

The animal orphanage in Collins has got a couple panthems. They raised a kitten last year, the little dude had spots. Got couple of big tigers that they raised from kittens. Might have an old lion or two and usually some yotes. They get wounded/retired stuff from time to time. The FWS took all their native animals, ie revoked their permit. They got a bunch of "soupped up South American cats" too. Drop by on Hwy 49 and donate for the chicken necks they feed'em from Sanderson's Farms Chicken Plant.....

Sounds to me like they need to start searching around the Deloach place. I have seen one, Feater has four reports and I talked to another guy that lives and hunts near there that says he sees one every year or so around there. I have witnesses that were with me and it came within five to ten feet from two of them. Needless to say our hunt ended at that point also. Have never hunted there since.

sighting just west of 35...... seems tally/leflore/grenada is where most sightings have been...

You need to follow up and get track, scat, hair or somethin tangible. Trailcam or video might work. I can't believe with all the "sightings" nobody's getting any proof! I thought I saw one years ago cross the road in an Alabama "widerness" but couldn't find anything to prove it. Couldn't hang too long either.

They've been seen in Pearl River county over the years. Not that scared of men too. I found a deer this year that had just died. When we skinned it out we found fang marks around it's throad/jawbone. This was a firstyear doe without spots. Prolly almost a year old. It was either a hellva large bobcat or a panther that got the deer in the edge of the food plot.

There was a guy call into Listen To the Eagle (Paul Ott) radio show about a year ago claiming he had a panther that was living in an old junk car out in his pasture near Noxapater. Panther sightings in MS seem to be about as common as UFOs.
