Central Florida HRC/upland Hunt Test Weekend

Postby Capt Jeff » Thu Jan 10, 2002 1:57 am

On Saturday, January 26 and Sunday, January 27, 2002 the Central Florida Hunting Retriever Club will be hosting its 3rd annual Back to Back Upland Hunt Test weekend at the Paul Platt Ranch in Fellsmere, Florida.

Some of the best retrievers and versatile gun dog breeds from as far away as Missouri and North Carolina will be attending this (2) two day event.

If they pass all (4) four hunt tests they can earn the title of "Upland Hunter" within the ranks of the Hunting Retriever Club and the United Kennel Club.

The dogs will be required to complete the following tasks to earn the title of "Upland Hunter."

1) The retriever must flush (2) two live birds and be "steady to shot."

2) The retriever must "honor" another retrievers retrieve.

3) The retriever must complete a "walk-up" and stay under control at the hunters side as a bird is flushed and shot from cover.

4) The retriever must "track" without handling a downed bird for a minimum of (40) forty yards with one (90) ninety degree directional turn.

The Hunting Retriever Club currently has (110) one-hundred and ten clubs throughout the United States and Canada with over (5000) five-thousand members.

The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

The hunts with begin at 8:00 am and 1:00 pm on both days.

Lunch will be available on the grounds and a tailgate party will be held on Saturday evening.

Directions:

Palm Bay

From the intersection of Babcock St. SE and Malabar Rd. SE, travel south on Babcock St. (CR 507) for approximately (15) fifteen miles to 101st.

Go west on 101st for 1 1/2 miles and it will dead end at the Platt Ranch.

Fellsmere

From the intersection of I-95 and Fellsmere Rd. (CR 512), travel west into downtown Fellsmere.

This is interesting to me, but I'm not driving to Central FL the last weekend of the season.

Any of you UKC/HRC guys know of any upland tests closer to MS?

My dog does really well hunting pheasants in SD. He quarters, is steady to shot, and will honor another dog. If he could get another title I'd be tickled.

h2o,

There are several fine clubs throughout your area.

Most only hold (1) one upland test during there regular hunts, so you have to travel to several hunts to get your title.

This is why this weekend is so attractive.

If you pass all (4) four tests, you earn your title.

Check out www.huntingretrieverclub.org for the clubs in your area.

What about it GooseBruce? Does UKC do upland tests in this area that go toward an upland hunting title?

Obviously its been awhile since I went to a UKC test (last time was 1987).

Yes, there are a few clubs in MS...closest to you is in West POint. It is the Mossy Oak Hunt Retriever CLub...i was one of thefirst members (only a 2 yr old club) and ran in the first preliminary test before i moved from MS. To my knowledge, they have not had an upland test...They had put on 2 Grand Test (SuperBowl of hunt test) since they are the HRC sponsor...Give Brad a call at the Mossy Oak outlet in West Point, MS and get more details on the club, tests, etc.

Pin Oak HRC is having an upland hunt on April 27, & 28 in cabot arkansas, I think its only 2 hunts, not 4. Email Mark Squires jmsquires@mindspring.com for info. Only upland hunt in the immediate area I know of. A ton of dem in LA, and a few in tx or ill. Ive never seen the upland hunt, but bet Ill be there on at least that sunday to see what its about. Talk of droping the upland outta the grand, and requiring a UH title to run, so everyone is trying to finally put these things on.
I don't know if MO is gonna have a spring hunt. Hope thats not the case, but thats what Ive heard from a couple places. Someone correct me if Im wrong.
Regular (started, seasoned, finished dogs, not the upland, which is seprate) hunts in this area, for anyone intrested, Tn River feb 23,24 Pin Oak march 2,3 Languille River March 16,17, West Tn March 23,24, Southern Flight (in hernando) April 6,7, Old Hatchie May 18, 19, and Hurricane Lake yet tba.
We've got a training day scheduealed for second sat in feb I belive, for anyone intrested in seeing what an hrc test consists of. Email if anyone is intrested in any mo info on these tests, or training day in feb. travis

THIS duck season is the closest to an OFF season that I've have experienced since '99 when my camp never launched a boat due to lack of water.

Thanks for the info HRC folks.
