For some good laughs about feeding...
I decided to do a little search on “feed” and “feeding” on three forums – SDH, Ducks South, and The Refuge. What a gag!!! I damn near cried I was laughin’ so hard readin’ some of this.
This is what I found.
“I have heard that DU is short stopping the ducks in Missouri by feeding them so the fat cats with DU can hunt them. I don't know if this is true or not but something is going on. “
“…it is possible to hold the entire population of ducks. In the US alone there are currently 94 MILLION acres of federal wildlife refuges. That does not include state funded wildlife refuges or private land owners that get millions of dollars each year to flood their land during the winter. Now granted that not all of this land is off limits to hunting, but ALOT of it is. Add just those three areas of land up, along with food plots, planted not only by DU but also USFWS, and that's were your ducks are. That comes out to more than one acre per duck.”
“I heard from another hunter that DU in Illinois bought thousands of pounds of corn this year and dumped it in their area to try and hold ducks up there.”
“I can assure you that the "SHORT-STOPPING" of ducks and geese in the northern states does take place by dumping corn to try and hold the birds there.”
“Brothers we can't do much about DU dumping the grain. When their revenues run out so will the corn...”
"’The Federal Refuges’ where they are using Taxpayer money to purchase grain.”
“I am saying that to keep feeding the ducks and pumping millet out for them by hand is wrong too hold them there is wrong! “
“By the way I talked too a friend of mine who actually was there and saw them do it with his own eyes, when they pumped millet out for the ducks in the water in a no hunting area on the waterway.”
“Being that you are from Missouri, you should know the ducks haven't left your state yet due to your Department of Natural Resources dumping corn by the 18 wheeler load. As long as your state provides them with food, they are not going to leave.”
“I have a step sister in IN that has seen grain dumped for the ducks with her own eyes.“
“The weather has also had a negative affect on the migration, but not the unnatural affect that baiting will have.”
“Has any body heard that D.U. was hiring ag pilots up north to feed the ducks so that they won't migrate down.”
“If they arent getting fed up there by ‘HAND’ by the truckloads or flying it on by airplane, then they would have to move on down ‘HERE’ to feed.
“I have heard by word of mouth that in the state of Missouri the wildlife and fisheries dept. is flying in food several times a week to try and hold the ducks there.”
And the topping on the cake
“I heard they were using cargo planes to drop thousands of pounds of corn....and selling guided to hunts to their ‘drop zone’"
The only thing I didn’t see was any eyewitness accounts, locations where the alleged baiting is occurring or any credible evidence that this is indeed happening. Seems odd that with close to 10000 members between the 3 boards, no one has seen this with their own eyes.

For some good laughs about feeding...
#1 the ducks aren't here
#2 it doesn't matter why
#3 people here are gonna bitch and blame weather, water, farmers....
We all NEED some type of justification for not even seeing any ducks.
What we don't NEED is YOU!!!

I just wish I had a job to where I could hunt 7 days a week and reserch the internet just to prove a point. As much time as some have spent researching this "why the ducks aren't/are here" subject, they could have written a final essay for a 4 yr. university. It takes much longer than 15 minutes to write a final essay in college

There is no use fighting with a damn yankee they think they are always right. I is like pissing in the wind when you talk to one. He dosent have a clue about what real duck hunting is. I been up there and hunted it is like going to a candy store. You dont have to work for the ducks at all every little thing is given to you on a silver platter. you know what yankee. THE SOUTH HAS ALWAYS BEEN RIGHT DONT FORGET THAT.

Crowbird -
It seems this is a North-vs-South debate in your eyes.
Sorry, but that isn't how I see it.
I see it as a few folks posting a rumor as as fact with no evidence what so ever to support it.
I have asked if anyone has seen this "hand feeding" occur in person. Out of close to 10,000 members of three different forums no one has told they have seen it happening this season or for that matter in the past 20 seasons.
I have asked that someone tell me where it is occuring so I can go there and see it myself. Again, no one has come forward with a location other than a smalll amount of feed being distributed at the "bird viewing area" for Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge in Alabama.
I have asked that someone explain to me how this can be occuring considering:
A - The expense
B - The fact that local Northern hunters would be impacted first and foremost
C - The amount of waste grain available in our ag fields precludes the need to feed
Alas, no one has been able to answer these questions.
This issue didn't get under my skin until I saw posts such as -
"We need to email our local politician"
"We need to start a petition and send it to..."
"We need to stop supporting DU"
All of which will cost both manpower and money that could have been spent on supporting waterfowl with the result being more ducks for everyone.
I guess those supporting these rumors would prefer to waste someones time and the money of a federal agency (that more than likely will have a 25% decrease in funding this year due to 9-11) chasing phantom grain trucks.
As I have said on other posts - Tell me where it is happening. If it is within a days drive, I will go there myself and get the lowdown and let everyone know what I find. Better yet, anyone can come and visit me and we will visit the refuges together. As before, I am still waiting.
Lastly Crowbird, I want someone to prove me wrong. It would be alot easier writing letters of protest that present facts and pictures than debunking rumors and myths.

Seems your hero agrees with most if not all of the points I have made. Not surprising, I agree with many of his ideas as well.
