Postby steel shot » Tue Jan 08, 2002 9:34 pm

Ive got an 870 thats probably 30 years old,its a 3" magnum with a full choke,no vented rib.Im wondering if I can shoot steel shot through it.It belonged to my great uncle who then gave it to my dad,now Ive had it for13 years. Its been in the cabinent for 3 years now since Ipurchased the 870 super mag.Just thought I would bring it out of retirement if I could to knock some rust off of it...Help me out...

Steel Shot -

DO NOT shoot steel in that gun. It's the old barrel and a full choke is too tight for the unforgiving steel. You are ok with the Tungsten stuff but that really is better in more open chokes - Improved Mod, Mod and IC.

I'd leave it in the cabinet or spend $200 for a modern Rem Choke barrel for it.

You can take that gun and stick it in your ear. You are the worlds worst at responding to posts or giving replies on this site. And next time I call and you cant talk because you are playing Tetris i'll tell everyone you shoot ducks with a pellet gun. Just kidding about that. I wont tell.

I personally would not shoot steel in an older gun with a full choke. You might put a mike in it so that you would know that it really IS or IS NOT really a full choke. In general, steel and old full choke barrels should not mix. I have seen one blow, and it is NOT PRETTY.

I would suggest that you buy yourself a box of hevi-shot or biz or TMatrix and shoot it and have fun with your uncle's gun.

I shot a couple hevi shells the last time I was out (notice I said a couple) and it was instant death. No second and third shots on the water to finish it off. I highly recommend it. I was shooting modified choke, I can only imagine the impact using a full choke. good luck.
