Buckwheat
Buckwheat
Anybody planting buckwheat as a summer plot or as a nurse crop, cover crop? I've bought a small amount online to plant with some sorghum, millet, and sunflowers. I'm gonna try to find some more locally to plant as a soil builder in some plots with poor dirt.
Re: Buckwheat
We planted some last year. I liked it.
Re: Buckwheat
When did y'all plant it? I've read a lot of folks that mow when it goes to seed and get a second crop. Of course, I won't be able to do that in a mix.
Re: Buckwheat
We planted first week of June which was probably a little late. It was in a mix with Sudan which absolutely dominated everything else. Think it was around 40% of overall planting mix, around 25% Sudan would have let more sunlight through which I think would have helped the buckwheat and peas below.
Re: Buckwheat
I'm thinking I'll try to mix in some peas, too.

Update. Instead of a few dove breasts, my plot is more likely to put some beef in my freezer.

Yeah. Kinda new to the neighborhood and not wanting to rock the boat. What's the tactful way to approach it with a neighbor you've not yet met? Don't want the first encounter to be me complaining.

If you are 100% positive about who they belong to, and have met the guy before, i'd just bring it up to him. Something along the lines of "hey, i saw some cow tracks in my food plot the other day, are you missing any?" Try to keep it from being a confrontation if you can. Now if he wants to be a a-hole about it, he is technically liable for any damages that they cause.
