North MS Turkey Report ???
North MS Turkey Report ???
Making my annual trek north tonight to hunt Sardis area with family next 4-5 days...wondering what the birds are doing up that way? Early spring weather, I'm hoping they are vocal...I expect they'll be henned up
Re: North MS Turkey Report ???
Hunted Chickasaw this morning. Had 2 jakes with 3 hens walk across me at 4 steps. Reports I've been hearing is a lot of gobbling on the roost, silent on the ground. They did exactly that this morning.camlock wrote:Making my annual trek north tonight to hunt Sardis area with family next 4-5 days...wondering what the birds are doing up that way? for exmaple you could kill a 4 greenheads (two banded), a mallard/black cross, and a mallard/gaddy cross and smash a hot blonde on the way back to the ramp and call it a hell of a day

In NE MS if you have birds, they are vocal on the limb but go silent once on the ground. Several veteran hunters have said they have resorted to hunting the pm once they find birds and they leave the hens. Some areas that have been hot for the last 10 years are now silent.

Must be nice. They have been staying with hens all day where I hunt.curlytail wrote:In NE MS if you have birds, they are vocal on the limb but go silent once on the ground. Have only had one gobble since season opened.

No matter what they are doing, it's 1.5 months long and I'm going to hunt them every chance I get. This past week when the weather has been awesome, I've been laid up with the sinus crud....and it's killing me to not be able to hunt. A coughing fit cost me a bird Tuesday morning.

Pontotoc County this morning no sound on the limb or on the ground initially.
Found 2 longbeards henned up in a small field around 830am, backed out into woods and called. Hens got fired up then gobblers came looking for the stray hen and hammering and strutting all the way.
BTW my little nephew whiffed on his first opportunity at a turkey but the little guy saw a real show none the less. His words were "my hearts beating fast" I said mine too. Being up close with a vocal strutter never gets old.

Went again in Chickasaw on Sunday morning. The woods were on fire with gobbles (mostly from jakes it sounded like) and silence after flydown. Forgot my thermacell. That won't happen again.
