New to Starkville
New to Starkville
Okay so I have just recently moved to Starkville, I am attending Mississippi State. I am looking for some advice as to where some good duck hunting is. I'm not asking for your honey holes just some general discussion on where I can start scouting. I recently acquired a lab to hunt with and want to put him on some good hunts next year, because to me seeing him retrieve is equally satisfying as knocking em down. Thanks in advance guys.
Re: New to Starkville
Go west about 100 miles. Duck hunting in your part of the world is decent at best

IBTD, East MS is one of the best kept waterfowing secrets left! You just gotta know where to go.britton wrote:Go west about 100 miles. Duck hunting in your part of the world is decent at best

I have not heard any good things about the wma's around here, if I go wma it's Howard Miller or Muscadine and we are lucky to get a one man limit most days. I have been told of a few public land spots in this area I just don't know how to start scouting.

Probably not gonna get a lot of discussion on the topic due to this

Maybe somebody will pm you some helpful info though.

Yeah that's what I was hoping for. I'm not asking for anyone's honey holes. I just need a general area or a nudge in the right direction to start looking. I'm from further down south and I'm not familiar with anything around here. I'm used to shooting a few woodies off farm ponds so anything above that is improvement for me.
Re: New to Starkville
If I had an inkling of where a duck was landing around Starkville, MS, I wouldn't tell but one guy and we'd be after them the next day.
Anyways, it's March 10. It'll be a little while before it's time to start internet scouting, which is exactly what you're doing. "Nudge, honey hole, general area, point in right direction", it's all the same. Settle down, post a little smack talk on the Ole Miss NOA thread, and sit tight for a while.

Start spending hours staring at google earth. It's what I do in the offseason.

i was there from 97-02 and hunted almost everyday of ducks season when i was at school. average was usually around the 3.5 mark for the year. not bad and not good just average. Mostly hunted by myself

Let us not pussyfoot around, you are Internet scouting. The bad kind of Internet scouting. The most offensive thing about an "innocent little ole me" Internet scouter is not so much the fact that you are being lazy; it's the fact that you're playing everyone for a buncha fools.
Here's how you go about the good way of Internet scouting, even a new area you don't know, cuz ain't nobody givin you a nudge, a hunch, a birdy-in-yer-ear, NOTHIN.
Google "public land hunting" for your zip code.
Ya oughtta get some names of some areas from that.
And go from there (Initiative).

Re: New to Starkville
I am not trying to be a smart ass but maybe this guy is just like i was when I first stated duck hunting. I didn't know crap and no one was willing to help. I did get some help one time and it cost me hunting land. I hunted public land twice killed total 3 teal but at the cost of a high speed race to the hole that we lost and a fight over the second hole with the same people that beat us to the first hole. My advice is don't trust anyone and don't share any info with anyone and if you piss someone off don't feel bad about. With that said if you are interested in deer hunting shoot me a pm and who knows you might just meet a couple of duck hunters that might let you go a long if they think you are a ok guy.greenheadgrimreaper wrote:Let us not pussyfoot around, you are Internet scouting. Re: New to Starkville
See I am okay with that. I have my honey holes back home and not a soul but me knows about them. But in my original post I made sure to say I don't want your honey holes I just want to know general areas that you are allowed to hunt. The internet hasn't help with much information on public land hunting.
Re: New to Starkville
that's just it...there's no overabundance of public info, because there's not much to be informed of and in the last decade/half-decade of the profound uprising of the 'commaders', what little info that USED to be available is like turkey info, now...lies and goose chases. greanheadgrimreaper's google advice will get you the info to the areas in the area and the rules/regs associated with each (draw, first come first choice, no waterfowl hunting permitted, etc).hey_bo wrote:....I just want to know general areas that you are allowed to hunt. there's a reason most of the hunters go west (and hunting students go home or home with a friend) to duck hunt.
good luck
