Lab questions

I'm sure i'll get as many different answers as I do post, but I was wondering where I could go and who I could talk to to get a good bloodline female black. To get all of my questions answered in one post I was also wondering when I should buy one to have it ready for next season and would it be o.k. to train it to blood trail deer also? I think I would rather have a female, but if anyone could sell me diferent on a male I am always open to suggestions. I have never had a lab before.... [img]images/smiles/icon_confused.gif[/img]

I don't know about where to get a female. I have a 9 year old male with good disposition and a great nose that is on his last year to hunt. I am trying to find a good female to breed him with so that i can get a puppy.

I have only had males, so I am far from an expert. I intend to get another male. The downside to males is they seem to be, in general, more hyper and difficult to control, the upside is they seem to hunt harder than females. The trick is to find one that has a good disposition. Only thru dumb blind luck did I end up with one but compared to the other 3 that i have had he is by far the superior dog, because of his calmness in the blind.

If you know of a female that needs to be bred let me know.

Well to start off with your first question there is a guy in or around the Memphis area that has some pups on the ground and I think that they are ready to go out of a Master Hunter bitch and a Field Champion sire. The guys name is Tim Nichols and you can reach him through is e-mail address which is (<TimothyJNichols@aol.com> ). I think that he is asking $450 for the males and $550 for the females. If you could go ahead and get one now you probably could get one ready for next season. It just depends on the dog and who is training it. IMO, I do not think that you should have one to retrieve ducks and to trail deer. It can just turn into a real bad situation. For example what if you were leaving a blind or flooded timber and a deer ran out in front of you and your dog started to chase the deer. On the male or female situation, that is strictly up to you. I have seen as many good females as I have males. But on a personal basis I own a male.

I may be a little partial, but Evonne Skeen in Ponotoc, MS has a good bloodline out of Slim (2000 CNFC, ESPN great outdoor games bronze metal winner). I have a 10 1/2 month old black male I got from her and I have been delighted about his performance and obedience this duck season. I think she has a litter out of Slim ready right now. Are you partial because of the dog or is she in the family. What kind of temperment does your dog have, and what size do you expect him to reach.

If a deer jumps out in front of your dog on the way from the duckblind, you say heel, and keep on walking.... Any dog you gonna take duck hunting, better mind better than that to take off after a deer, don't care if you where deer hunting 5 minutes before.
Bloodtrailing for a deer with the same dog coud be possible, however Id think its PRIMARY job, whichever it might be should be firmly rooted in its mind, with expereince afield, before training with the other ones. Talked with some of the SAR dog guys, and they use their labs for searching people, and hunting, and hunt tests/trials. #1 problem you'd probably have, is a dog used to track like that, running nose down, is its blinds would get real hunty, but heck that happens to a degree from just hunting a dog. Labs are very veristile, and can do more than one job without conflicting a lot of times. And no matter who you go with on a puppy, make sure you've got hip/eye gaurentee, and a solid pedigree (those initals DO matter, otherwise you're taking someone else word what the dog could do), and join a local retriever club. The money you save between a $5-600 quailty puppy, and a $250 back yard dog from the newspaper, is nothing over a dogs life. Its not enough for labs to simply be registered, lots of registered full blood dog have the hunt bred out of them, and bad hips bred into them. Thrasher, I have to agree with Drake. I have one of Slim's puppies but out of a different bitch, but he is a good puppy. Dash is just over 9 months old, but already exhibits great skills. He weights 52 pounds right now and going by Slim, he is full grown. I got my puppy from Evonne also, I have no ties to her, but she has been very helpful in helping me train Dash. She has always taken time to show me something either I am not doing or what I need to do. It would not hurt to give her a call...

$2500 for a puppy out of an AFC female and an AFC-FC titled male is not far-fetched. ANYTHING out of this years-last years-or the two years before that-national champion will cost you a minimum $1500. the quality of the mother gets the price up even more. In fact, most of the puppies for one of these high end litters will be spoken for prior to the birth.
