Which one do you guys shoot? Looking at either / or as that's what barrel I can get for the Encore.
35 seems like it has a lot better ballistics. Which has easier to find ammo?
45-70 Gov or 35 Whelen?

Can't get a 444 barrel? In between the two balistically and much easier to find boolits
Re: 45-70 Gov or 35 Whelen?
45/70 ammo is easier to find, but that said, get the 35 whelen. I've got both and after buying the 35, my 45/70 never leaves the gun cabinet. I just order the ammo online
Re: 45-70 Gov or 35 Whelen?
Bullets are not that hard to find any of the 3 mentioned. I have all 3 and have only used the 35 for the last 6-7 years. 35 outperforms the other 2 ballisticly by a good bit. They will all 3 get the job done tho.

Joel my 35 whelen is my all around go to gun. I take it year round and feel comfortable out to 300 yards with it. I shoot 180 gr Barnes Triple Shock and they are nasty to say the least. Its the same bullet that most people are shooting out of there 30-06.

Re: 45-70 Gov or 35 Whelen?
The 45-70 can be handloaded to really good ballistics.. The 35 Whelen is pretty tough on the shoulder it is simply the 30-06 necked up to 35 caliber. If you really want to get into sweet shooting with 35 caliber bullets look at the 358 Winchester. This is what I shoot on my Encore. It is the 308 Win necked up to 35 caliber, just about the same ballistics at the 35 Whelen with a lot less recoil. Another great brush caliber is the 35 Rem.
