Do ducks use coffee bean for feed?
Re: Coffee bean
sesbania!...maybe, but it will quickly take over and be a p.i.t.a. more than it will do good if it isn't in an easy place to get a tractor in. we let it get away from us in a bottom we hunted and it covered all but about 40 acres of what was once over 100 acres of open water AND turned our #1 area it into a roost hole. we were finally able to get in after a drought year and bushhog it at 16+ feet tall with thick, woody stalks and it was hell on the tractor (overheating from the fine "hairs" clogging the radiator).
Experience is a freakin' awesome teacher...
Re: Coffee bean
I can get to it and roll it down. Would the ducks feed on the seeds? I realize would be taking a risk for next year if wet and can't get to it.

Disclaimer...........im not a waterfowl biologist.
A biologist told me that it has an acid (maybe tanic) that only wood ducks can process.
Get rid of it as fast as you can..........its probably covering up good stuff.

Gone! Disc instead of roller.
Re: Coffee bean
I can tolerate a little bit to add a sense of security to a hole especially in a high traffic situation, but as with many things in life it's only good in moderation, and good is a stretch IMO.
Re: Coffee bean
Donia's word "sesbania" is the devil, except for the scenario Dan mentioned.

Re: Coffee bean
If you can mow it about 18" high when it's real tall like that, you'll kill it and release everything underneath it.
The August rains turned a lot of holes into sesbanua nightmares.

Re: Coffee bean
I kind of agree. Birds don't use it for feed but they do like it when it is kinda thin. It provides some cover and ducks will land in skinny water and swim in. I like it in my duck holes. Mild to moderate amount.
No, i don't want to know you ---- teul

When mowed won't the hardened stubs be hard on a dog or waders?

Re: Coffee bean
I know its been good for us in our big hole to give some security and cover.. I have seen mallards fly down in it beating it with wings knocking down seed and pick up and do it over and over again so they must eat it some.. we do keep it in ck though as to not let it take over the hole by cutting then disc the stobs... this hole is all moist soil veg but drys nuff to get in it...when they get shy of blind we stand in beans

Re: Coffee bean
Yes. Mow it before it matures. It'll be green soft stalks at that point, not the hardened punji stakes you get after it turns woody.strap wrote:When mowed won't the hardened stubs be hard on a dog or waders?
