Buying used from out of state
Buying used from out of state
So I am looking at buying a used truck from out of state. I have them working well with me on price and almost have them where I want them on trade. Truck only has 11k miles and is a year old. So it has 19K miles / 2 years left on the bumper to bumper and 89K miles / 6 years on power train warranty. Carfax looks great. Dealer seems to know the old owner very well as he seems to trade his truck in every year for a new one.
Things seem to be going well, and they made me an offer. All I have to do is say yes or no. But I feel like I am forgetting to ask for something. What do you all ask for when buying used?

Re: Buying used from out of state
Find out if you are paying them sales tax and they send it to tax assessor or will you have to pay it when you go get your tag. I have done it both ways when buying out of state.
Re: Buying used from out of state
with it only being a year old there shouldn't much of a service record to check and if he buys yearly from them most likely the dealership does the servicing, anyway. if any recalls are due, make sure they've been applied.
Experience is a freakin' awesome teacher...

I wouldn't rely on someone else to pay my taxes. But that's just memshunter77 wrote:Find out if you are paying them sales tax and they send it to tax assessor or will you have to pay it when you go get your tag. I have done it both ways when buying out of state.

I'll be doing it when I get my tag. As Andy mentioned below, I'm not sure I'd trust them to do my taxes.mshunter77 wrote:Find out if you are paying them sales tax and they send it to tax assessor or will you have to pay it when you go get your tag. I have done it both ways when buying out of state.
You are correct. He bought and traded to that dealer, and there are 3 service records with that dealer. Looks like the only recall is a possible hack through the radio. Nothing else.donia wrote:with it only being a year old there shouldn't much of a service record to check and if he buys yearly from them most likely the dealership does the servicing, anyway. if any recalls are due, make sure they've been applied.

Never traded out of state but have bought 4 in the last 4 years all out of state. I will never buy another vehicle in ms. They just simply can't compete with other states on cost. Texas seems to have the best deals especially on toyota. I buy used and not new but most are almost new. I am not talking saving a few hundred..I am talking thousands and that includes shipping and tax. Even when you take the internet pricing to get local dealers to match they tell me they can't do it. I have had zero issues with online sales as they can't have negative feedback and they cover the automobile from top to bottom with pics of any scrathes. I always ask if it has ever been smoked in. One piece of advice is to find your on shipper if you aren't wanting to get it yourself. May take a few weeks to find one but many will save you a bunch if they are coming through without a full load etc.

Thanks Lilwhitelie.
Andy, I found the truck on autotrader in Missouri. They met my price on the truck, giving me what I expected on trade, and it looks like I am going up there Saturday to get it.

Not trying to hi jack the thread but has anyone used vroom.com? Had some friends that used them and were extremely pleased.

Re: Buying used from out of state
Have a plan "b" when you go out of state. A dealer between you and them. I once was buying out of state and they changed the price on me after I drove 3.5 hours. Told me that was just a "ball park" figure. I explained to the salesman, who was commissioned profit paid, that we agreed on a price that was faxed to me. He told me price was not final until the final paperwork was done. I told him no problem and that I would not come all this way to not have another truck I am interested at from another dealer. I got up and proceeded to the door and he did not let me make it outside saying they could do the original price agreed on.
Also, make sure they put on the we owe contract, that they will have you paperwork delivered in 5 days to get your tag/pay taxes or they will pay penalties. A lot of states have 30 days, but we only have 7 in MS. Sales Manager told me that would not be a problem, but did not want to put on we owe contract. I told him if it won't be a problem then put it on there in writing. He did and they had to fedex me paperwork on day 5. Dealer's title clerks don't get in a hurry when they are use to 30 days and temp tags.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

The two I have bought out of state I had 10 days to get my tag and pay taxes after the tax collector received the paper work from the dealership.cmooredeer wrote:Have a plan "b" when you go out of state. Re: Buying used from out of state
I bought a truck from a dealer in Indiana a few months back. Sounds like a similar situation as you. Truck had 9,000 miles and was $12,000 cheaper than anything comparable around here. I was skeptical, but had the guy send 100 pics and we agreed to a price . I bought a plane ticket for $400 and they picked me up at the airport when i arrived. The paperwork was already ready. I drove the truck, came back to the dealership, and signed a couple of papers and was done in literally 30 seconds. Then i drove 13 hours home. It was the easiest car deal of my life, other than the long drive home. The dealer already had a 30 day temporary tag on the truck. I hope you have a experience as good as mine... I couldn't ask for a better deal.
The point to all of this, is to tell you that sometimes you will have a good experience buying a vehicle out of state...

Re: Buying used from out of state
I really don't think there is a better way to buy a vehicle. Both of the trucks i have bought have been out of state, and I basically "stole" both of them. I laugh at people when they say the need a new vehicle and go to the local dealer and buy one off the lot. You are doing the right thing. The key to getting a good deal on a vehicle is having the patience to wait for the deal to come along.
The last truck i bought (Loaded Lariat F-150 2010) i found in Waxahatchie, TX. Went to look at a truck in Mobile before i pulled the trigger and the salesman was trying to sell me on one that was 5K more expensive, with less features and more miles. I showed him the auto trader listing, and he flat out told me to get on a flight that afternoon and go buy it.
One other thing, make sure to either get the agreed upon price in writing, Have them fax or email you a copy to bring with you or print out the autotrader listing. The truck i bought in college was listed for 19,500 when I found it. A day later it was not on autotrader, and two days later it was back listed for 24,500. luckily i had printed out the original listing and when i went to buy it I showed it to them and they honored the original price. I think someone screwed up the listing. Got hit from behind 3 years and 80K miles later and the insurance company gave me a check for 22,500. Felt nice to make money on a vehicle.
