is the "active topics" button gone, or just in a different place?

different place. look under the upper left menu (3 stacked lines to the left of the "forums" tab at the top)

and i think (i know, dangerous!) "new posts" is the same

Just a little tip that I'm sure some already do: I bookmark the active topics page. When I click my ds bookmark out goes directly to active topics. Since the button isn't front and center now, that saves a lot of clicks.

Btw, this is my first post from my phone. Love this new look.

How do you switch to desk top and back to mobile?

I am not sure you can. The site recognizes what you are browsing on and adjusts accordingly.
