Dog Help

Postby featherduster » Mon Jan 07, 2002 2:09 pm

Got a Chocolate yesterday. Saved him from the axe at the humane society shelter. People moved away and turned him in. Dog ain't trained and is almost 2 years old. They said he was an outside dog (yard dog). In 24 hours he will heel a little, sit pretty good, and retrieve in the house with a toy. Took him to a lake yesterday and I really don't think the dog had ever been in the water. He waded around a little but was real skittish. Hunting hadn't been to good lately so I took him to a timber hole thats only about knee deep. He followed me in and sat by a tree on dry ground with as good of manners as I've ever seen out of a trained dog. He also wasn't gun shy and I took him to pick up the ducks but he wouldn't lick or hold any of the dead. Anybody got any helpful info on training an older dog other than the usual, being patient, and its gonna take a while.

I know this might sound a little out there but take a dead bird after you have de- breasted it and use the carcass to "play" with in the yard, also a good game of "keep away" might help. Good luck and congrats, I have on numerous occasions adopted animals from the shelter and found homes for them, Believe it or not a lot of pure breeds go down, Most shelters even have a list of people to call when a certain breed arives, you might want to check with your local shelter.

get a bumper or toy he likes and play with it all the time so that he loves that toy. Then tape on a few long wing feathers and let him play with that and get the taste of feathers in his mouth. Slowly introduce him to the duck. The instincts are their to retrieve but it will take a while to get them out of him. You don't get a six week old puppy and take him straight to the duck blind and expect him to retrieve. Even though this dog is two it's like starting out with a puppy. Only good advice I have is be patient, good luck.

I second the warning about NO chocolate for dogs. Enough chocolate can quickly kill your dog. Jethro

I think that I would try to get his favorite toy or bumper and use it for a while like Junior P suggested and then tape on some wings or something. I would then graduate into the duck itself. I do not think that you need to use the chocolate. It may be a helpful method but I do not think that I would try it. The only other advice is to be patient, consistent, and repititious with what you want him to do.

HERE GOES MY 2 CENTS WORTH
SOMEONE B4 SAID TEACH HIM JUST LIKE A "YOUNG"PUPPY.

TRY A TENNIS BALL, YOU CAN BOUNCE IT AROUND
AND REALY GET HIS INTEREST UP. THEN PLAY
THE KEEP-A-WAY GAME WITH A DUMMY(GET ON YOUR KNEES AND GO IN CIRCLES AROUND YOURSELF WITH
THE DUMMY) WHEN HE GETS IT, PRAISE HIM.

KEEP A DUCK FROM THIS YEAR (THAT MAY BE HARDER TO DO THIS YEAR THAN MOST SEASONS), GET THE SCENT ON THE DUMMY,PLAY A LITTLE MORE
KEEP-A-WAY.

IF THE DUCK HAS BEEN BREASTED, SIMPLY FOLD THE REMAINING SKIN/FEATHERS OVER THE BREAST BONE AND WRAP THAT AREA WITH DUCK TAPE.
YOU CAN FREEZE IT AS MUCH AS YOU WANT.

THIS MAY WORK, IT MAY NOT, BUT SIMPLY TREAT HIM LIKE A PUPPY. IM SURE YOU'LL DO FINE.
