Ask DS- setting house trailer on poles?

Postby wwa7 » Mon Jan 11, 2016 8:38 am

Hey guys- with the flooding of the ms river becoming more common. We have decided to put our 16x76 house trailer on poles. Looks like we are gonna put it up about 12-14ft. For those of you with cabins that are elevated, will telephone poles work ok? I've had folks say hell yea they work great then some folks say yes they work great. How far would u space your poles?

I've also had folks say they are jacking the trailers up with come-alongs, jacks, etc vs going with the crane. Any of y'all been through something like this?

The trailer is located in coahoma county. If you know anyone who puts the things in air, let me know.

Just be advised that the frames under house trailers are not that strong. Plan on having to strongback the main beams or it could buckle on you. How high you thinking?

Man. I'd find someone who has done it before. We had to brace the beams on ours just moving it down the road from one camp site to another.

I had one 10 feet up but sold it when ATCO sold club. Put it up on poles and brought it up with chain hoists, one on each pole. Used 12 in x 6 in timber beams for cross members. Its not hard to do. I spaced them every 8 feet. At that time the chain hoists were the biggest expense. I beams and a crane would be a lot better long term but if your doing it on the cheap its not that bad.

We used to be members in a deer camp on Kings Pt. Island and we had our trailer about 20 feet in the air. We used I-Beams and chain hoists to lift it. There were numerous members in that camp that used timber poles though and they didn't seem to have any issue with it. It really wasn't that tough, took us a day to have it completely secured.
