Manny Diaz....
Thoughts? It's like states defense doesn't even have tackling fundamentals taught early on in football. Lots of half axed one arm tackling has cost us a bunch of yards. Personally if Mullen stays, I think he should get rid of manny.
Manny Diaz....
according to head to head, mullen brought in someone to teach a new tackling technique that has less propensity for injury. it has the helmet behind (???) the body instead of facemask to center mass like we were taught from an early age.
Experience is a freakin' awesome teacher...

Re: Manny Diaz....
No 11 and No 17 got trucked by our RBs Judd and Wilkins. That is more of a strength issue.
I expect those boys will spend more time at the "Farm" next Aug.
For a demo of the new "textbook" tackling technique, check out the Rebs Hilton ( No 38). He does it better than most. We will likely miss him next season more than anyone.
To deliver a big hit with the new technique ( not leading with helmet) requires a lot of strong explosive thrust with hips and legs followed by locking up with arms and taking the ball carrier to the ground.

I don't know about this for Mullen but it is what Urban Meyer has had taught at OSU. If you notice their linebackers, they use a rugby style tackle in which the head of the defender is behind the body and momentum of the runner...wrap around the body with the arm and roll.
Re: Manny Diaz....
Where is Joe Lee Dunn when you need him.
Heaven help us if Diaz stays very long. I like Mullen and think he can and has done a good job, but he needs and O-line coach, a D-backs coach, a D-coordinator and an offensive coordinator with some balls.
I didn't like Diaz the first time he was at State. I cringed when the reports were out that he was getting the job back. Absolutely the
definition of insanity.

Mullen isn't going to leave 4 mil a year plus incentives for 2 mil a year with shotty alumni backing.
Re: Manny Diaz....
Diaz installed Pete Carroll's tackling system last spring. Good tackling technique that was poorly executed by the players. Could be that the staff did a poor job of teaching. I don't know.

Usually means the staff did a poor job. Not sure what MSUs assistants make but they may want to look at bumping up pay to get better assistants.bigoak wrote:Diaz installed Pete Carroll's tackling system last spring. Re: Manny Diaz....
the way i understand it, there was someone who came in to demonstrate to the players and teach the technique to the coaches...so, yes, it is on the coaches.
