Youth Rifles?

What gun's are ya'll using to get the kids in the sport? Most importantly, what are the LOP's on them?

are there any production rifles in compact/youth that are <12.5".

Remington Model 7 youth has a 12.5" LOP and is a great gun. Weighs next to nothing and with low recoil shells and a rest, the kids can shoot it all day.

if you want to go less than 12.5 inches LOP you are probably going to have to go with an adjustable stock like those found on AR platforms..

Just note, contrary to popular belief, youth rifles are not designed for 6 or 7 years olds. A typical youth rifle is usually just 1" shorter lentgh of pull and about 2" off the barrel length.

A compact or youth rifle with a shorter stock and 18" will usually really lightweight.. If you get one of these really short rifles in caliber that most think is a youth caliber like the 7mm-08 it will kick worse than the same gun chambered in 243 even though they are the same case size..

If LOP is your main concern then look into an AR platform or the Mossberg 30/30 with the adjustable stock on it..

My son started off with a 243 h&r youth handy rifle. LOP is 11.75". He is now shooting a weatherby vanguard 2 youth. It's LOP is 12.5" in 7mm08

Bunch of differnt ones out there. My first consideration would be the age and build of the child. a 7mm-08 is a mild cal, but to a 7 yr old would probably be a handfull and make them recoil shy real quick.

I started my daughter with a 223 handi with a youth stock. Shot the 60 gr Nosler partition Fed Premiums. She is now shooting a CVA Scout in 300 Blackout. No recoil on either one. CVA is easily a 200 yard gun, but where we hunt about 100 yards is all you gonna get.

I do have a Model 7 Remington in 7mm08 that I will eventually move her to, but the single shots are safe, simple, fairly inexpensive and I use the "1 shot" factor to get her to take her time on the shot. I guess it works, she is 5 for 5. (Started her at 7, she's 12 now)

I have had rossi's, h&r's with retractable stocks, shot the youth model 700 and settled on the weatherby youth 243 about three years ago. It comes with spacers for the butt pad to help them as they grow and it comes with a GOOD trigger. Not too light but not a New York lawyer trigger either. My very small 9 year old shoots it easily. She shot it last year as well with no issues.

My son is 10 now and weighs 82lbs. He has killed 8 deer so far. His first was at 6. All were killed with a CVA Scout 7mm-08 shooting Remington Reduced recoil. His first was a 7pt w/a 19" inside at 164 yards on a rest.
Have them shoot a 22 a lot then let them practice a little with the big gun. No problems at all shooting the reduced recoil loads.

I put this one on an Encore for my two boys (6 and and it fits them much better than a Ruger Youth model and others that i tried. I ordered a bull barrel 6.8 SPC and put this stock on it and they absolutely love it.

Have 11 year old twins and they started shooting a handi rifle-22/243. i would let them shoot the 22 all summer then replaced the 22 with the 243 barrel, they have killed deer after deer
