What bird am I ??

Postby Wildfowler » Sat Jun 21, 2008 2:28 pm

Does anyone recognize this fellow??

I first saw them in a neighborhood off of Old Canton Road in Jackson near Colonial Country club about 6 weeks ago.

Took this picture yesterday in the same vicinity, but this time off of Plantation blvd in Jackson.

I'm pretty sure I know what it is, but wanted to see what others had to say first.

Kite
I assume it's a Mississippi Kite.
I had a pair nest the last 2 years by my house.
Looking for 2 duck calls from Dominic Serio of Greenwood (ones for Novacaine)

I also think MS Kite. One way to be sure it's a kite is that there will be a long string with a little kid at the other end.

Seriously though, you will see kites in/over town. They like grassy areas near woods where they can pick off flying insects like cicadas, grasshoppers, etc. I counted 25 one day over a big sand field on the north end of Archer Island while we were riding down Lake Ferguson.

That was my guess too.

Let's try this again, I'll try to make it a little harder.

Nitejar or bullbat kinda looks like that as well. They migrate down here in the summer. Easily identifiable b.c of white bars under the wings.

I don't think these were nighthawks based on their size. These were crow sized birds. Is there a way to tell for sure from this picture with no contrasting underside color available? It was too windy to hear that characteristic nighthawk call at the time of this pic.

Man, I haven't thought of a bullbat in years! Used to see them every afternoon at our home out in Winston County as a boy. I haven't heard that sound just at dusk in a long time! Takes me back!

I think it's a kite as well.

Your a big X to me...

But I assume this is a Bullbat.. Haven't seen one of those in years.. Bring backs lots of memories of hunting in South Tx.. You'd be suprised how many of those almost got a shot of lead cause I thought they were dove..

I think the "roar" is only heard during mating season. I've heard it a couple of time while picking huckleberries in Pearl River Co. Late May I believe. Like the name says teh bird only comes out at dusk/ early evening. They aren't as much fun to watch as kites. We had some over the house for a few days and let me tell you those kites are amazing ariel acrobats.

Just saw one while riding to the dove field in Humphreys County. Actually, I see these things all the time now-a-days. They must becoming much more common? At least along my route?

Edit: Was this really written seven years ago?

No, the internal clock/calendar was never reset when the server was updated in 2011. There a lot of funky dates on the site due to that issue. Anyway, a pretty neat blast from the past regarding the MS Kite, Andy.

Go back to killing hogs :D

When was the tornado that went through North East Jackson? Because that's when I took the picture.

Think I'm up to 45 or 48 for the year so far. And half of those have occurred in the last six weeks.

I think the date posted is correct. There was no server issues. I was just pulling your leg about that. You do need to go back to killing hogs though. Every dead one is a good one!
