On demand / movie streaming

I know with all the "damn the cable man" threads we've had, one of you will know. What service has the best selection of on demand movies to stream? Netflix always has a limited streaming selection and I'm kinda getting irritated by it.

Saw the new Mad Max Fury Road trailer and got the itch to watch thunder dome (wife had not seen any of the first 3). Only place on my direct tv that had it was a channel we don't have.

we cut the cord about a month ago after bill went up another 15... senseless to pay 140 bucks for 5 channels we actually watch.

I was able to get most all of the content needed through ROKU 3, Kids rooms have smart TV's with Hulu + and Netflix apps. In total for netflix accounts and Hulu + i'm paying around 30 bucks a mo.

Also you may want to look into XBMC or Plex as a back end media server to host content to clients installed on the smart tv's, Roku, or smart tv boxes.

I built a dedicated Plex server using a spare desktop which host and shares a good bit of my content I'm pulling from web sources to all of my devices.

Get a Roku, you can rent the latest releases through Blockbuster and a few other apps on there as well as through Amazon Prime.

If you have Amazon Prime you can stream shows / movies / etc. I bought a Samsung 60" LED SmartTV last year. Didn't want the SmartTV function as I thought i would never use it. That thing is worth its weight in gold.

Also if you have HBO in your cable package, you can stream with HBO Go

I'm a prime member and i've found the amazon prime instant video stuff to be sucky at best. The content that we actually want to watch on there is usually pay per episode or per series which is why we ended up going with hulu plus and Netflix.

what kind of internet requirements are needed for these? I currently have dishnet and i am already over running my data plan. There is not any fiber optic cables in our area yet according to ATT.

We have chromecasts on every tv. We had hulu but cancelled it bc we didn't think it was worth it. Most of the networks keep their tv shows online so you can watch them as long as you sort of keep up. (don't get more than a month behind, for example).

Crackle is an app that has free movies. Decent selection, and not the same as Netflix. We use netflix a good bit.

With the chromecast, I can stream ANYTHING that will display on my desktop to a Tv. For example, I don't have Fox Sports 1 but I found a stream of the Nascar race that was on it and streamed it.

Plex is another app you can get - I haven't gone as far as getting the paid version though.


The problem I'm having is that we're still on the AT&T DSL and our bandwith is capped at 150 gigs per month. Go over and they charge you $10 for each 50 more gigs. AT&T's uVerse has a cap of 250. We've gone over 150 a few times and we haven't completely cut the chord yet.

Good thread - I need to get off my butt now that it's warm and install this new antenna and rotor I have.
