Harley, I concur 100%. The blinds on AKC tests ar pretty long. I have run a few with my Springers even though I was DQ because they are flushers and not retrievers. (Did JAM) Dogs had a hard time with the long blinds. Even using a couple overs. The thing is I never shoot more than about 40yds out. Even on crips once I get the dog out and he hits scent it's on. Never have lost a downed duck. The Boykins I used to do pickups with in NC were about the same. Except for one. She could line a blind out to about 100yds. She was amazing. Finished 2nd or 3rd in the Boykin Trials in SC a couple years ago. Her only fault was she flash pointed when we flushed quail. Regardless, as I said in an earlier posts. If you want and great little hunting dog that is easy to work. There's nothing wrong with a Boykin. Some people like chevy's and some fords.

hey goose your right, any dog worth his
weight in dog food should line every blind you send him on. however, when he was given
those commands...he was 400 yards away!!!!
ain no boy-kin gonna do that

As an audience but not as a participant. Have been to the last two in Hernando. Went especially to watch Gwen and Raven run in the derby this fall. They have made a really special pair. Everyone looked at us funny when we clapped for their performance.
I believe the successful FT dogs have the innate skills necessary to participate at hunt test game. The reverse may not be true.
The field trials do remind me of when I use to own, train and compete with quarter horses on a national level. To be able to win it took the money to buy the best and the time to stay sharp. Hunt tests seem more for the hunters and their dogs to be able to participate together during the "off" season.

YEP, I AGREE , THE HUNT TEST ARE FOR THE
MAJORITY OF THE HUNTING DOG OWNERS, WITH OUT
THAT SEGMENT OF THE DOG GAME, THE OTHER WOULD SUFFER SOME.
IT SIMPLY BOILS DOWN TO THE TIME YOU HAVE AND THE MONEY TO BURN.
HEY CHANCE, DO YOU OWN A DOG OUT OF SASSY AND SAMMY??

I have three labs. An older male that came out of one of the Bunn's dogs. He is my preferred hunting dog. I have a chocolate(snicker) female out of Pachanga Magnum Force and a Storm's Riptide Star bitch. Have been running hunt tests with her.Young black female out of "Prize" and AFC JJ's Desire To Go will be ready to run this spring.
Lanier does have an exceptional golden, of course they train nearly everyday. Saw a lady from Texas with one that was truly awesome. Including Ajax it was the first one I ever wanted to own.

HEY HARLY
I AGREE THAT THE FIELD TRIALS ARE NOT EVEN CLOSE TO ACTUAL HUNTING SET-UPS, SUCH AS
UKC AND AKC HUNTS.
EVEN THOUGH ALL I RUN IS FIELD TRIALS WITH
THE WHITE COATS, IT STILL IS AMAZING TO
SEE WHAT A DOG IS CAPABLE OF, I.E. 450 YARD BLINDS, 250-30O YARD MARKS AND SUCH.
CHANCE I WAS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHO YOU WERE.

No doubt AJAX is an awesome golden, he has got to be 7 or 8 by now. The white coat field trials are a bit much for me, I think that any mark where you have to use a white five gallon bucket to use for a signal on a downed bird is just a wee bit to far and getting away from what is trying to be accomplished!! White coats or not, make no misteak about FT's. They have to go to such extreams to determine the best of the best, the dogs are that good. The reason we can buy dogs as good as we can today, is because of ft's. 95% of upper level ht dogs have ft backgrounds. The good gets better with selective breeding, the average gets worst with Ive got a lab, you've got a lab lets have puppies breeding.
Testing dogs in simulated hunting condtions is still testing dogs. I belive you can do both, as long as equal attention is paid to both, you dont have to let either suffer. travis
