I am about to buy a new 4wheeler in the near future and intend to have some custom racks/removable boxes to go on racks to help haul all the junk that is necessary for us to go duck hunting.
Anybody built any racks on their wheeler/utv that they can post pics of to give me some ideas?

Re: Custom ATV Racks/Boxes
Built out of 3/4 inch square tube, 1x1x1/8 angle, and 1/2" expanded metal
the rear rack mounts directly to the frame instead of to the racks so I can support more weight
also have another set of racks that slip into receivers on the main rack that hold a pirogue up top
used plywood on the bottom of the rear rack and rubber mudflaps from a truck on the front of it to keep the mud from getting on everything
This is the only picture ive got

Nice Racks!
I plan on building a boat / canoe rack for my ranger this summer.

Thanks guys. BDeer I have been thinking on something similar to the one you have there but have it where it will sit down on the existing after market back rack and secure into place with some sort of pins for quick removal purposes. The thinking behind this is so that if need be i can haul stuff to the blind, take the box off, and go back and get people.
May be too much sugar for a dime, but thats my thinking right now.

I have a regular basket rack with 1" square tubing welded straight above the rear wheels sticking straight up with hooks for hanging. I can haul 4 dozen Texas rig, me, passenger, dog, blind bags and room to spare. It is simple I can send pics I don't Know how to post off my phone
Re: Custom ATV Racks/Boxes
That picture shows 1 doz. and the dog stand in the back rack. It will fit 2 doz without the dog stand. Blind bags and guns(in cases) go in the front basket. Seems like actually removing the rack instead of just grabbing gun cases, decoys and blind bags is more trouble than its worth IMO. I can still ride 2 passengers and the dog with basket racks full. Although with that load and towing a john boat the rear suspension really starts to squat down pretty good.TurkeyHunter27 wrote:Thanks guys. At some point I want a ranger but I like being able to put the bike in the back of the truck for traveling.
My main objective was to be able to carry everything I need without having to bungee strap anything down.

Re: Custom ATV Racks/Boxes
For extra weight you can add a set of coil over shocks to basket and rear hitch to help. I saw one the other day that looked like it had cultivator springs on it to keep it from sagging with a hog dog box on rear rack.

Saw those back in the late 90s and its like they fell off the face of the Earth. Was a single coilover that connected to the rear rack and then down to the hitch. Quick Google search turned up nothing, so I wonder if that caused any inadvertent problems or something.

Re: Custom ATV Racks/Boxes
The extra spring is good in theory but would it not cause the exact same problem (rack breaking) just upward force instead of downward force when loaded?
Re: Custom ATV Racks/Boxes
Just FYI on building the racks - I had demonstrated to me that a conduit bender will bend the prettiest curves in square steel tubing. Makes throwing a rack together a lot easier. Just use a bender one size bigger than the tubing (i.e. 1" bender for 3/4 tubing) and you can lay a perfect short-radius bend in there.

The one I saw was just extra atv shocks/coils.

Re: Custom ATV Racks/Boxes
The start of another rack...needs crossbars when mounted. Could weld or for stackability drill and bolt. Would need some knee bracing though to keep rack from scissoring.

Some picks of "right angle conduit clamps" w/saddle, ubolt to quick qnd easy attach rack to bike rack bars, basket tubing. need 2 front. 2 back.
(Have added front basket; had to shorten front of rack and now clamp to basket rather than round bike rack bars)
