243 or 7-08 for youth?
Re: 243 or 7-08 for youth?
My son and I have had good experiences with a .243, I suspect the 7-08 is also good as well, but I love a .243, shot placement is important with any caliber

THESE RIFLES ARE NOT bb or pellett gun!!!!
OTHERS AND I HAVE USED 243'S FOR YEARS!!!!!!
WITH A SCOPE, SOME SAFETY MAY APPLY!!!!!!!!
243 WITH BALLISTIC TIP IS DUBBLE DEADLY AT DISTANCES NOT KOWN TO THE AVERAGE REDNECK!!!
I NEVER SHOT A DEER WITH SUCH THAT DID NOT 'DIE" IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!!!!!! HOWEVER, THE UNBELIEVABLE HAPPENS!!!!!!!!

I bought my son a H&R 243 when he was 6.It kicked him so hard he became gun shy. I bought him a 7mm-08 last year and shoot Hornady reduce recoil and it's like shooting a 223. He loves it

Re: 243 or 7-08 for youth?
I have a Ruger Youth Model .243 for my kids......the LOP is a little too long for my 6 and 8 year olds. So, this past spring, i ordered a MGM bull barrel in 6.8 SPC after hearing CWink talk about the caliber. I put it on a Thompson Center Encore Pro Hunter Frame. I ordered a Choate M4 adjustable stock for a T/C Encore. It adjusts down to 10 or 11 inches and has a pistol grip. I must say it's not much different than them shooting a .22. We're using a Hornady BTHP right now in either 100 grain or 110. My 8 year old dropped a 140 pound doe in her tracks at 100 yards last weekend. You could see the entrance and exit wound in both front shoulders. Inside chest cavity though was mush from one side to the other. We were all amazed in the skinning shed what that little bullet would do. I have a T/C barrel in 7mm 08 and one in .270 too to swap out as they get older. I bought the frame and all of the barrels except for the 6.8 off of the classifieds here. It's probably the best and most efficient money i've ever spent on a gun.

I've gone back to carrying my model 7 .243 (my first rifle) over the past couple of years. The deer and hogs I've shot with it are just as dead as the ones I've shot with my .45-70.

6.8spc here too. My son killed this one this afternoon. This is his 2nd deer with the 6.8, shooting 120 grain SST. Great caliber!!
