Thanks for the info. Want to try and broden my horizons from just beer and the occasional jack or crown drink. Have started drinking a little rum lately and am starting to become fond of it.southdeltan wrote:Crown isn't Bourbon. It's a Canadian Blended Whisky. It is, however, something you should probably have since most people are familiar with it.mshunter77 wrote:Never been a big whiskey guy but I am about to start putting together a whiskey cabinet to have some to have for when we have friends over. As far as bourbon I know what the staples are Charter, Makers, Crown etc. What I am wanting to know is what are some good rums, scotch, vodkas and what ever else is needed. Not wanting cheap cheap stuff but nothing expensive say $40 or less.
For Bourbon, I'd recommend Elijah Craig, Ezra Brooks (a very affordable 90 proof), Wild Turkey 101 to go along with Old Charter and Makers. You should be able to get some things like Woodford Reserve for under 40 but I wasn't impressed. I'd look for a nice BiB (bottled in Bond) 100 proof.
Tennessee Whiskey: Jack or George Dickel.
I don't have a lot of experience with Scotch, but I aside from having a blend and maybe a single malt - I'd recommend a good Irish Whiskey. Jameson's is the biggest name but I prefer Bushmill's.
Tequilla: 1800
Rum: Captain and Bacardi (Gold/Silver) are standard. I'd recommend the Kracken, Myer's Dark and (if you go to Louisiana) Old New Orleans rums (silver/gold/spiced).
Vodka: I'm not too hung up on vodka being expensive - since few people actually drink it straight. If you're going to mix it with something Exclusive is an inexpensive alternative to Goose.
Gin: Seagrams for the brothers, but New Amsterdam or Hendricks (if you can find a deal).
I won't get into the red and white wines but it'd be good to have some of each on hand. I definitely won't jump off into Craft Beer (go to the Food Forum and look for the thread on beer).
Various mixers: soda water, tonic water, margarita salt, olives, limes, lemons, bitters, etc are good to have.

Good stuff, but I'll add since the 2 you don't expound on are staples in my house.
Vodka - There is a handle of Tito's at my house at all times. Smooth as a baby's rear.
Gin - Bombay Saphire, the blue bottle, can't miss it.

Ill add a little to this as well:
Here are my favorites. Ive drank a lot of high end stuff. Ijust dont like paying for it...lol
Vodka: Bloody Mary...Handle of Titos as well; plus Zing Zang at all times!! Titos makes a decent dirty martinin as well. Or Svedka Citron over ice.
Scotch: Famous Grouse for frequent consumption (imho best blended ever), any of the higher end single malts for special occasion. over ice
Bourbon: Wild Turkey 101 splash of Sprite
Rum: Sailor Jerry, splash of diet coke....best rum, worst hangover!!

Oh, I'll add my 2 bourbons of choice as well. Basil Hayden and Wild Turkey Rare Bread. Both are right about the $40 mark.

Re: Whiskey Discussion
Always some Bulliet 10 year old and makers at my house, usually a single barrel Four Roses, and when I'm lucky enough to win the yearly bourbon lottery....a Pappy, of whatever vintage they get that year. (3 times in 5 years)
I can live with the cathead or 360 vodka for bloodys, but absolut peppar makes a dam goodurn too. Ketel one or goose for tonics or shooting...
Keep a bunch of wine in the cooler too for that once in a blue moon I decide to drink some or when other people that do show up. Ravenswood, Coppola, Paradux, etc.
Other than that....BYOB ifin you want Rum, Scotch, Gin (I'm banned from consuming that), cat liquor, Absinthe, sweet tea vodkie, or whatever.

If partaking in drinks at my house...you will be offered Old Charter & sprite. If you don't like that, we have a faucet with plenty of water.

Re: Whiskey Discussion
Bulleit bourbon or Elijah Craig neat or with a splash of water if I'm feeling up to "splurging" on some decent stuff.
Old Charter with splash of water is a staple and will tide me over most of the time.
I've never been one to add too much sugary carbonation to my bourbons. I do like a good ole' Jack and diet coke every once and a while...... if I'm drinking Tennessee stuff.

Re: Whiskey Discussion
I've always kept a couple bottles of Wild Turkeys Kentucky Spirit on hand and would butt heads with anybody about its quality. While I still enjoy this, I was given a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle this year for Christmas.
WOW!
