Public meeting tonight concerning Malmaison GTR

Postby Don Miller » Tue Aug 12, 2014 10:52 am

There will be a public meeting tonight, August 12th in Grenada, 6pm at 1240 Fairground Rd. From what I understand, the MS Dept of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks will not be pumping the Greentree this coming duck season due to funding and "management changes". If you hunt this WMA, please try to attend to voice your opinion on this matter.

I was told they are going to pump up the Greentree but just not as high as in the past. The water levels in the past has been killing the timber.

They will pump the ditches full and that's it. What killed the timber happened 15 plus years ago when we had a wet summer like this year and no one bothered to check to see if the beavers had been at work. Three months later, they finally let the water off but it killed and stressed a few hundred acres of timber.

They should be able to have it pumped for the season and have it on the trees for no more than 2.5 months. I don't think that will hurt them. But you can't leave the timber under water for 5-6 months and expect the timber to live.

Basically what Don said. Gonna be little boat access early in the season and you can't enter the launch area until after 2am due to folks camping out and building fires. Traffic will stack up on the gravel road and then park AGAIN at the ramp for a 4am launch. Also idle only out to the big water.

I could have listened to Dr. Rick Kaminski talk for hours on ducks and habitat. He is one of the leading authorities on waterfowl. I'm glad I attended.

Just about the dumbest chat I have ever heard of. Who in the L makes these rules? I hope they can be held personally liable when the public road is full of kids waiting to get on WMA property and some drunk Monday kills some people. Stupid people I swear. Can they not understand that the more of these rules they make the worse the problems get?

No Scott I was not able to attend. I missed the announcement, my fault.I have no issues with the management of the WMA, save the trees at all cost. Even if that required much more drastic measures for the short term.

My comments are based on the rule or proposed rule to restrict access to the boat ramps from 2-4 am. That is going to cause a giant mess. One ramp I can think of, that rule will completely close down the county road. These hunters are not going to wait to show up, they are going to park in the road and wait. What about the other traffic on these roads? U think with 10 boats lined up in both directions on a smallish gravel road the deer hunters or road travelers are going to have free travel?

I missed the anoouncement until too late for me to go, but we shouldn't have to watch the dept every year to see what no arbitrary new rules are made up. You keep making more restrictive rules EVERY YEAR.

Scott, I'm by no means jumping your case about this...

Lodi, and I have had the conversation recently about these announcements and such. I guess, yes, you can check the dept website from time to time and get these messages. But, I bought a Florida fishing license a few years ago...haven't since. Do you know I get emails from Florida DWF weekly? Still. Rule change proposals, season dates, limit restrictions and changes, red tide reports, everything and anything that concerns the public and their use of the resource gets emailed out. I like this. Even though I could give two dumps about what is happening in Florida, and I could probably unsubscribe at this point... I digress

why doesn't Ms have something like this? I put my email down everywhere it's asked for, buying my license, WMA slips, the bathroom at pelahatchie bay...errrrrrr
