"Even if you are strongly in favor of ousting a senior senator from office and replace him with a young, inexperienced candidate, now would seem to be one of the absolute worst times in history to do so."
Very good post….I don’t agree but good post.
Now, regarding this statement, when do you think is the right time to do something about it? It has to start somewhere and for me it starts now.
As far as McDaniel and the job that he will do, I have no idea. I don’t have a crystal ball. But I do know that 40 years of senior leadership and the “It’s just the way the government works” has gotten us in the trouble we are in today.

"If that is true and if McDaniel had his way our state would turn into a third world country."
Have you been around this state lately? It is a third world country.
And if you enjoy all these benefits that you are receiving (as a state) from the government, also know as welfare, you might need to reevaluate what party you should be backing. You can’t be for states’ rights and at the same time have your hand out. Not trying to be unpleasant just being honest.
People seem to forget that the only power the public has is at the voting poles. If electing Chris McDaniel does nothing else, it will open the government’s eyes to the real problems that we are facing and in turn, just might do something about it. Or, we can keep doing what we are doing and see where that gets us.....

If we cut federal spending like the tea party wants then we will first have armageddon and civil war. Then the survivors will be back to living the way folks lived after the great depression. You say WE recieve 3 times as much as we pay...but who is WE?? Like I said I haven't ever gotten a red cent from Thad, nor do I expect to get any from McDaniel or anyone else. But who is it that is receiving tisi "pork money". I asked earlier to please give me some examples of where this money (3:1) goes, who gets it, what do they get it for, what do they do with it.... Before anyone answers keep in mind the numbers ScottBrown put up earlier...the VAST majority of this money goes to the Food Stamps and nutritional assistance programs.
So I ask....where does this money go and how does it help me as a MS resident??
Re: Mississippi is ready for some change
I thought federal aid was 50% of Mississippis general revenue. I was wrong. Its only 45%. Where does the money go? Everywhere. http://ballotpedia.org/Mississippi_state_budget

are you saying that mississippi receives 3 dollars of federal funds for every 1 dollar that mississippi taxpayers pay to the federal government?
Re: Mississippi is ready for some change
Those that say they don't get any money from the federal government are wrong. We all do in a way. Every month the federal government deposits millions of dollars into Mississippi banks in the form of welfare, disability, etc... Folks used to get a check and bring it to the bank but now a lot of it is ACH direct deposit. So what do folks do with that money. They use it to buy gas, buy groceries, buy clothes, beer, cigarettes etc.... The grocery store owner takes that money and buys a new vehicle or buys a lawn mower or buys a shotgun. The cycle goes on and on. The grocery store owner also pays local taxes to fund the police dept and the fire dept. No matter what your occupation you benefit from welfare money coming into this state.
Now lets stop that money beginning July 1, 2014. (1.) It badly hurts the economy and the local government tax collections. (2.) You have a bunch of angry democrats on your hands with no money, no job and no way of paying the power bill or the grocery bill. What are they gonna do? Are they gonna all calmly march down to the local WIN job center and start looking for a job?
What are we willing to sacrifice to take this country back from the democrats? Are we willing to drastically lower our own standard of living? Are we willing to endure an economic crisis similar to the great depression? Are we willing to take up arms and defend our homes and our family from those that have no money? Are we willing to give our own lives to take the country back? Is McDaniel ready to do all those things? I think we will have to make those decisions if we really want to drastically cut federal spending.

Re: Mississippi is ready for some change
Yes. In fact there was an article on it in The Atlantic recently. Google it. Mississippi and New Mexico get $3 for every $1. These 2 states have the highest "take" to "give" ratio in federal dollars.gps4 wrote:GulfCoast wrote:About 3 in to 1 out, IIRC.gps4 wrote:does mississippi receive more money from the federal government than mississippi tax payers pay to the federal government?

I'm glad Thad has been in office since before I was born, sounds like life would be Hell without him. Guess I need to start researching states that have high ranking senators in the event Thad:
A) Doesn't get reelected
B) Retires
C) Dies before I do
"Ladies and gentlemen, the little man has admonished me
to grasp the broom of reform
and sweep this state clean!"

I am willing to make that sacrifice right now so my grandkids don't go through it. You are right that if we do not cut spending we are headed for a meltdown. I say we are headed for a meltdown either way. Cutting spending will not avoid a meltdown. Cutting spending will cause the meltdown to happen sooner. Causing it to happen sooner is not a bad thing but folks need to understand how badly it will hurt Mississippi. Long term it will be much better for our grandchildren. Short term it will be bad news for us and our children.peewee wrote:bigoak wrote: What are we willing to sacrifice to take this country back from the democrats? McDaniel paints things with a broad brush and is appealing to peoples ideals and emotions. The truth is he does not have a lot of specific answers for exactly how he would do things. Saying you will cut spending and defend the constitution sounds good but what does that mean? What spending does he want to cut? He says he is pro public education but he does not want any federal dollars to fund education. How will he fund it? Fine with me if McDaniel gets elected, I will probably vote for him. Just don't expect him to do all he is promising. I just hope whoever wins can beat the democrat candidate.
Re: Mississippi is ready for some change
To answer jwayne's question regarding when is the right time to remove a senior Republican Senator, my response would be any time other than when the current President and his administration are holding office. This President has been the furthest left in our history. I could be wrong, but I do not foresee our country electing anyone that far left again. So to answer your question, I would tell you to make such a vote once Hillary takes office. She is much more middle of the road than our current President, even to the point that it scares the far left. Hillary will be predictable with her Presidency and leadership - the same can't be said for our current President.
420 - It would probably scare you to know what precentage of each federal dollar touches your life everyday. If you have a bank account, own a home with a mortgage, drive a car on a highway, send a child to a public school, go see a doctor, or buy bread in a grocery store, then federal dollars affect you on a daily basis.

Re: Mississippi is ready for some change
During Thad Cochran's time in the senate, real wages have decreased, costs of living has increased, over 80% of factory jobs have left the united states, the deficit has quadrupled, the middle class has shrunk, the cost of education has increased (while the results have declined), the entitlement structured has ballooned, warrentless wiretapping and erosion of the bill of rights, and two endless wars being fought abroad.
Re: Mississippi is ready for some change
All due respect, but these arguments about us needing welfare remind me of people who commit crimes, (deal drugs, steal, etc) and try to justify it by saying they had to, because if they didn't their family would starve. No, what you should do is the right thing and work to provide for your family. Can't find a job paying above minimum wage? Fine, take 2 jobs. Still not enough money? Fine, take 3 jobs. Man, it just makes no sense to me. It is clear black and white to me, no gray. If we don't want to make the hard, right choice to stop crazy overspending and overfunding entitlement welfare programs even though we know it's right but it would hurt our own back pockets, then we are the problem. Being a leader is about making tough choices even when you know many will hate it, but you know it's right.

Well stated. How is us worrying about losing our share of pork different than the ninjas voting based on handouts and obamaphones?

I can't believe it doesn't scare the crap out of more of you that one of Thad's biggest backers is Mike Bloomberg?!?!

What are Thad's plans? Havent heard him speak yet (literally). His plans...not Greg Harpers, not Haley's, actual words spoken from his mouth. He's "too good" for a debate, and that arrogance turns a lot of people away. I think it would do both sides good if there were a debate. Either expose one another and/or let each tell how they are going to do stuff. I agree neither gives specifics other than they want to be senator and that isnt right.
