Ask the ATV fix it guys...

Postby Deadeye » Wed May 07, 2014 9:28 am

Got a Yamaha Kodiak that is not firing (no spark). The plug is new, I replaced the coil, getting the correct ohms from both sides of the coil. Everything I'm reading is pointing to the CDI box or the stator. IS there anyway to tell if it's one or the other? The CDI is relatively expensive unless I can an aftermarket one.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Does it have a emergency kill switch?

Only kill switch I know of is the actual ON/OFF ignition switch above the push start button? I took it out and made sure it was still making contact, didn't see a problem there. I'm not sure how I can test that with a ohm meter though.

Ok you said you replaced the coil pack did you get the spacing off the flywheel correct? The magnito is good isn't it?

The stator is just like an alternator for a car. It charges the battery. It will still fire the spark to the plug if the stator is bad. Will it turn over with the key, just not fire? If so, you can possibly rule out solenoid too. Then that might would lead back to CDI box.

Yep, the bike will turn over fine, just no spark from the plug. I've checked all the fuses in the fuse boxes, all are good. I'm not aware of a fuse that's on the frame rail.

Blake, I have no idea of the flywheel spacing, all I did was replace the coil pack. Keep in mind, I'm not a mechanic... everything I've done so far is from reading blogs about similar problems. I've checked all visible wiring and can not see a problem there.

I got a sneaky feeling that the CDI is the culprit but I don't want to shell out the money to replace it if that is not the problem.

Thanks for the feedback, keep 'em coming.

CDI box is the little box most likely under the rear fender attached to the frame. Try getting a buddy to tap on it with a hard screwdriver handle while trying to crank and see if it wants to fire. Like a starter that isnt working quiet right.
